So I woke up today to find out that my car window was broken into and my camera was stolen, and no i dont need any people telling me not to leave my camera in my car. I should be getting around 1500+ from insurance, and was wondering what everybody thought I should get. The camera I had was a rebel xti with kit lens and 75-300 telephoto lens, plus the bag, memory card, etc etc.

What is a good camera to buy, along with an all-around lens such as a 50mm, for around 1500? I can spend more, but I would like to keep it as cheap as possible since I still have to replace my window and match my 5% tint on my car. I am willing to go used.

Wow, how did they see you camera in there with 5% tint? I would go with a used 30D or a new XTi with a Canon 28-135/28-105 and a Tokina 12-24.

[EDIT] If you go with a used 30D you might be able to afford a 17-55, 17-40, or a 24-70. If you go that route I would probably settle with the 24-70.

Thats exactly what I told the policeman, that the person had to know it was there, but he was convinced someone could shine a flashlight through and see it in there...but whatever.

Thanks for the quick response and input.

As im quite new, could you list if the prices you are quoting are new or used? Thanks.

Also,I figured I might as well upgrade, since now I have an excuse and I probably will in the future anyways.

I think either of these 2 would be a great choice.

Used Canon 30d = $600-700
Used Tokina 12-24 = $400
Used Canon 28-135 = $250-300
Used Canon 24-70 = $900

I would definitely go for the 30D and the 24-70 but obviously that's just my opinion.

40D -$1149 or 30D- $759.99
Tammy 17-50 2.8- $431.63
50mm 1.8 Mk II- $86.48
Memory Cards - San Disk Ultra II 2GB-$24.92 and PNY 266x 4GB-$63.99
Backpack- LowePro Mini Trekker Classic- $79.95

With the 40D you are going to spend $1825.34, a little over your budget, with the 30D you will spend $1435.99. You will have the same gear as me with the first option.

ps: prices quoted in Amazon.com

Why these two? THere is way toomuch overlap. I'd dump the 28-135 and go just 24-70. If the long end is not long enough, then go for the 24-105.

NIKON D200;)
Just kidding, of course. I'd throw in another $1000 and get the 5D + 24-105...then I'd NEVER leave it in my car!!:D

Actually since your starting over, now would be a good time to do a re-evaluation of brand. Canon has been rocking in the past but has floundered lately and Nikon has been coming on strong. Both systems have advantages and disadvantages. Maybe it’s time to open the doors to all vendors.

No no no. I messed up organizing that. I was just showing him some used prices. My thoughts were for him to go with the 30D with the L lens OR the two other lenses.

All you really need is a 3 y/o girl. Before you know it, you will have so much crap piled up in your car that not only will a thief not be able to tell if you have a camera stashed, you might not even be able to find it yourself for a while. ;)
