I plan to buy Canon 100-400 mm L lens. Size and weight plays a big role, is there an alternative that I could consider? A lens that is more compact in weight and size yet deliver equivalent quality?

The 100-400 IS is unique in Canon's line up. There is the 70-300 IS and 70-300 DO IS that are Canon lenses too, but they are not "L" series (but are smaller/lighter). They don't give you 400mm though. IQ on the 100-400 IS is still better too overall.

There is also the 300 f4 IS with a 1.4x TC. That is a nice option.

There are some 3rd party options like the Sigma 50-500 and 80-400 with OS. But Sigma also has some new lenses coming out that will directly compete with the 100-400 IS in the Sigma 120-400 OS and 150-500 OS. But those lenses don't seem to be available until after April/May (it seems).

Otherwise, the 100-400 IS is still a great lens.

As far as I know, Sigma lenses are heavy and huge. Is that something in the past?

Since size and weight are important, would a prime work for you? EF 400/4 DO IS?

P.S. Oh - a little checking has revealed that the 400 DO weighs more than the 100-400. Sorry.

P.P.S.:
100-400 weighs 1380 g
70-300/4-5.6 DO IS USM weighs 720 g
70-300/4-5.6 IS weighs 630 g
300/4L IS weighs 1190 g
400/4 DO IS USM weighs 1940 g

How about the 70-300?

Some Sigma lenses are heavy and huge, others are light as a feather.

The same goes for Canon lenses.

Sigma has 2 new OS lenses coming out in March that look to be very good competition for the 100-400L, the 120-400 OS and the 150-500 OS.
