This was a 3AM experiment with a pen that had a light-up, color-changing top on it.

With a wave of my "magic wand", this happened! Insomnia can be neat!

30 sec @ f/10.

C&C welcome!

(and yes, this is my avatar ;))

Actually, I was a bit confused for a second since there is a "red x" in the photo, at the bottom right "rule of thirds spot". You had me second-guessing my post fix! Thanks for the heads-up on the broken link! :D

I imagine a tripod with a 30 second exposure. Then he waved the pen in front of the lens while changing colors.

Try it with a lighter or a laser pointer.

I set up in a windowless room, no lights on, set the shutter to 30 seconds, and experimented with aperature, ISO, and "swing speed". (tripod, of course) I took a bunch of shots and got quite a bit of variety. As soon as I get the chance, I'm planning on trying a few different things.

As it turns out, I liked the simplicity of the avatar crop, too. I'm going to try to replicate that in my next session, as well as playing around with some other effects. I'll be posting more if I get anything interesting! Thanks for the feedback!

MadTony,
I love it :)
Its beautiful and well done, the only improvement I can see is adjusting contrast to make the black sections blacker.
Great idea!!!!
and Great Avatar :)
