I posted the same pic in the Photo Sharing section where I didn't get very far. I'd appreciate some comments/feedback as I see potential in it but my pp skills need a bit of steering.

The useful comment I got was that contrast was a little high, which I appreciate. I'd be grateful for further feedback & suggestions for improvement.

Please bear in mind that I use LR and don't have CS, so selective editing is not possible.

I can't suggest anything for PP, but the next time you are doing such a shot, I would think that the staff should lighten up his face, just like it lightens up the robe. In other words, as soon as you take in the overall scene, you want to see his face, and it isn't there.

Just raising the staff might do it.

I'll learn French and ask him to think about the photography potential during his next performance then :D

I know what you're saying and I have another shot where his face is subtly lit by the staff. The light from the staff was quite weak though, so the idea here was that he'd be mostly silhouetted except for the glow off the sleeves, buttons and les pantalons. His face is 'just about not' silhouetted as there is a shade of orange from the ambient light.

This is from a live performance though, where I have no control over what the artist does and certaily won't be interfering with his act.

Yes, I can see that you are severely constrained in what you can do. It was just a thought.

Maybe just go with the flow of the shadows instead? Can't change the light for his face, so why not just eliminate the light you don't need? Then again, i like severe contrasts;)
