Hey gang,

I have upgraded a my camera bodies and will be selling my backup 20D. I am pretty sure that everyone will want to know the number of actuations on the camera. Is there a way that I can reliably figure this out?

Thanks!

Scott

Nope, no way at all by the person on the street. There is only an image counter, and that can be altered by either the different memory cards that have been through the counter, or from the menu option to reset that counter. Canon techs, on the other hand, most likely have a way to get to system parameters and see.

That is what I was afraid of. This camera will be a total guess for me than. Other than the condition of the camera the actuation count will be a very rough estimate.

It is funny how there is software for the Mark but not the prosumer camera.

Sending it to Canon is the only way. One of those little things Canon has determined one must pay a lot more before seeing. :(

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Possibly not any more, the MKIII series no longer has the shutter count embedded in the EXIF, at least not in any place that has yet been found.

Not sure, Canon can put anything they want in the Exif data, it is just a big data record that can be used for about anything. Don't know why they would have removed something so nice for the used communuity.

Thats one I'm interested in too. I have a nephew thats working on his masters degree in computer science, (programming) and I'm going to bring it up with him. If Canon service centers can extract that data I'm sure theres a way to get to it. This kids good, he's been getting into the bios of a lot of different pieces of equipment and nosing around since he was about 15 or 16. Now, does anyone have a 20D body they're willing to pony up as a test subject?
