Has anyone found a UV filter and lens hood for Canon's wide converter (WC-DC58A) for use with the S5 IS? The converter lens is unthreaded at the front, so it would have to be a friction fit or slide-on type to go over the 79 mm outside dimension of the front of the lens. Canon does not currently produce these accessories, although they recorded my inquiry and said that adding such items as accessories is based, at least in part on, the level of consumer inquiries. Lensmate indicates a Tiffen .75x wide converter accommodates either a filter or hood without vignetting, but I'm reluctant to go that route since I've already purchased the Canon wide converter lens.

This is my first post and I'll be grateful for any helpful suggestions.

I have a WD-DC58 and use it with my kit lens (efs 18-55) on my XTi.
The only way I've figured is to put the filter on your main lens and then add the DC58 (So the filter is sandwiched in between. Depending on your lens the filter edge may show up in the frame so you may have to do some cropping. As far as the hood I think you'd have to make something yourself for the DC58.

It's a little late at this point, but my suggestion is to return the canon WA lens and get the Raynox DCR-6600, which is a superior lens AND has threads on the front. 8-) I've been using mine an have had ZERO vignetting!!

My thanks to both Alexajlex and DeeDoubleYou for your suggestions. Given the cost of buying a second wide converter lens, I'll stick with what I have already and hope that in the not-too-distant future either Canon or someone else will manufacture a filter and lens hood that can be used with the Canon wide converter.

I've done a little more research, however, which I'll offer for the benefit of anyone reading this and who is considering a wide converter lens for the S5. As DeeDoubleYou suggests, the Raynox lens appears to be a good choice. I say "appears" because I have no personal experience with this lens. It seems to be a quality product, and unlike Canon's wide converter for the S5, the Raynox lens is threaded for filters. A filter will protect the lens glass (very important!) but vignetting may be a problem, especially if you add a lens hood. The thinner the filter, the better.

If you have an S5 with the 58 mm lens mount, be sure you purchase a wide converter lens with a 58 mm screw mount. And of course, you will need the conversion lens adaptor sold separately, either Canon's LAH-DC20, or the equivalent from other sources. Lensmateonline lists the Raynox DCR 6600 PRO for about $140, but it appears they currently have it only in 52 mm thread mount. The Raynox web site (www.raynox.co.jp (external link)) lists the SRW-6600-58LE with a 58 mm thread mount. It is the same 23 mm focal length equivalent for 35 mm film as the 6600 PRO. It doesn't appear that you can purchase Raynox products directly from their web site. However, the information about their products should help you find a source from which to purchase.

Lensmate sells the adapter and the Raynox 6600 in 52mm threads. They recommend only using that version and not the 58mm Lens because Raynox built the 2 just slightly different and the 52mm works best on the S5.

From personal use with the WA Lens, I suggest a lens hood for sure. Due to the curvature of the glass, almost any bright light source from almost any direction will cause flaring. I have not purchased one, but when I do, it will be a petal shaped hood instead of the round to help with vignetting.

After many shots with the Raynox attached, I could never imagine using the S5 without. Too bad Canon didn't design it with a wider lens to begin with!!

I think the selling point for super zoom cameras like the S series is....well......the super zoom. You just can't get everything for such a tiny amount of money.

Compare pictures on this page : http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/S2wide.html (external link)

You will see the big tradeoff with the Raynox6600 which is to pay for the distorsion correction, you loose sharpness in the corners. Corners are actually out of focus.

This is why I didn't buy it. For now I stay with the Canon WC-DC58A. It is not very wide but corner sharpness is better and you can always correct linear distorsion by software .

ps.: I would also like to be able to add filters in front of the Canon wide converter like UV and circ. polarisation... I really don't understand why they didn't provide front threads. This was really stupid.

EDIT : take a look at PTlens (external link) software to correct distorsion :
