You could try taping over the pins on the TC. The Canon 1.4x III and 2x III refused to take a shot with an 800mm mirror lens I tried, but with the pins taped over it worked.

I say "it worked", the image quality of a cheap 800mm mirror lens is dire. With a TC on it's terrible .

IT WORKED! Much obliged sploo! The camera (Canon 5D) takes a photo as planned with the Kenko 2x TC and Sigma 600mm mirror lens mounted! I do not know anything about quality yet but I'll give it a try tomorrow. You saved my day!

autofocus was attempted, but not useable...

here's one if it helps any:

I am currently on holidays in Hawaii and before I departed home I purchased the new Sigma 120-300 sports lens matched with the 2x teleconverter specifically to use on this trip.

I am using the lens and converter primarily with a Canon 1dx, but also with a Canon 7d.

Today the 2 x converter appears to have stopped working and I keep getting a message with each camera body that says "Error 01. Camera cant communicate with lens. Please clean contacts".

I have tried all my lenses by themselves with both camera bodies and they all work fine, but as soon as I attach the 2 x converter to any lens all I get is the error message.

I really need the adittional focal reach of the 2 x converter whilst I am here in Hawaii but I am unable to get it to work.

Can anyone advise of way to rectify the problem?

1) What happens if you clean the contacts?

2) What happens if you tape the extracontacts on the TC so only the "normal" contacts are used? If this works, then all EXIF info will be wrong because the camera will not know about the TC, but it might make it possible to get photos.

So far I have only been able to "dust clean" the contacts with a lint free cloth as I dont have access to proper cleaning solutions here and the only proper camera shop on Maui is shut. I fly out to Oahu tomorrow morning so may have to look around there for a good camera shop when I arrive.

I haven't tried taping the pins yet.

Hello all. Today I received my cannon 1.4 tc mark II. Lens is a canon 100-400 L. Camera is digital rebel xsi. No auto focus. As soon as the TC is installed the LCD reads M only foe manual focus. Tried pin taping to no avail. Is it the camera body or just the way it is? Please help would a different body give me auto focus?

Only pro-bodies can AF at f8. So, the 100-400 will not AF on your camera. I am not sure if the pin tape trick works on a Canon TC at all. Never tried and don't need to...

Taping the pins will "work" - in the sense that the body may try to AF, but there's a reason a non-5DIII/1D body won't AF beyond f5.6; i.e. you can try, but unless you're in really good light it's unlikely to work well. The lens may stutter and hunt a lot, which probably wouldn't do it much good over time either.

I have just come across this great produce, one made by X pro claiming about 1.7x with two component. By removing the central optical part, the adapter becomes a 25mm ext tube. Optically it is amazingly sharp...it cheats the camera by having a 1.4x TC and I have no problem using it on 100-400L with autofocus on 5D3. Here is one taken by 70-200
