Thanks I was looking at the Sigma version and Kenko version as well, I may go Sigma since that's the lens I will be using it on or are the others just as good or better?

The Canon 1.4x III is very good, though I believe the version II is very close (more difference with the two 2x versions apparently).

That said, the Canon TCs seem to be more strict about compatibility with lenses than 3rd party TCs.

Not only seem to be more strict. It just has to be more strict - since the Canon TC:s extrudes into the lens it really does require the lens to have such an opening.

Indeed. The 2x protrusion is pretty huge. I have the 1.4x III too but didn't have it to hand to remind myself of the size of the "bump".

I found the 2x will physically mount on a 24-70II with the lens at the long end, but the camera (a 5D3) fires the shutter then reports an error, so for whatever reason it's not keen on the combo.

I'm sure the exact question I'm about to ask is already in this thread somewhere but without trolling through the entire thread I'm unlikely to find it. So here goes again ......

I use a 1Dmk4 together with a 300 f2.8 IS. The 300 is not the latest model. I use both a 1.4X and 2X Canon Mk2 extenders with this combination for motorsport photography. The 1.4X is excellent and quality is first class. However the 2X is a very different story. It seems that the A/F slows up so much that the hit rate suffers a lot. It [Strangely] seems to be more reliable in lower light situations. In bright strong sunlight it is at its worst. My question is would it be worth while buying the Mk3 2X extender. Would it be enough of an improvement to warrant the extra outlay on the updated extender ? Im sure someone somewhere is using the same kit as me and knows the answer. I would love to hear some comments.Thanks in anticipation.

I just bought a Kenko 1.4x TC, with the idea of trying to tape the three pins to allow auto focusing at F/8 on the 70D. No such luck - as soon as I tape the pins the camera immediately automatically switches into manual focus.

But I just thought: I taped the pins on the camera side of the TC, where they are flat. Maybe I should have tried to tape the pins on the lens side? Or should it make any difference?

Interesting to notice that I used the TC with a Sigma 120-400 f/4.5-5.6. The AF works until about 300mm, way after the F stop reaches 8. I guess more testing will be done over the weekend.

According to AMAZON.COM, the Kenko 1.4X PRO 300 Teleconverter DGX for Canon EOS Digital SLRs is
"Discontinued by Manufacturer". So, its now or never. When I ordered one a year ago, it was $200. Although I later sent it back, I am tempted to re-order it at its new, lower price - $138.

Note - While ordering one of the last five remaining copies, I saw that the 2x converter is also discontinued.

I'm just about to pull the trigger on getting a 2x TC and with the price of the PRO 300 and HD being roughly the same in Canada, I was wondering which would be a better choice. The PRO 300 has 7 elements vs the HD having 5 elements, but HD is newer and official spec sheet says the resolution is improved. I'd be using it on the Tamron 70-200 so I don't need support for EFS lenses.

Man, for a hobbyist photographer, these forums can be quite intimidating haha. But I am looking for some experienced input.

I have a t3i. And being a hobbyist, I'm also frugal when it comes to photography. I have a Canon 75-300mm and am wondering if a teleconverter would work with my setup, as I like wildlife photography. Any help/suggestions is greatly appreciated.

My 25 yr old Kenko 1.4 x from the 35mm days didn't cooperate acted confused with my newer lenses. Now its in a box.
I'll just pay the price for Canon.

Given the high f-stop focus capabilities of the new R5/R6, I am leaning towards purchasing at least the Canon 1.4x III TC for use with my R6 and Canon 100-400L II. My question is, will it also work with my Tamron G2 70-200 f2.8?

I don't know about the Tamron 70-200 but I tried it with a Tamron 150-600 G2 on my R6 and it wouldn't autofocus, kept hunting in and out and making loud squealing noises. However, manual focus with that combo works great on the R6 if you're not trying to hand hold it.

'It'...a Canon 1.4X, what version? 1.4X-III? Interesting to hear about these focusing issues on newer RF-mount bodies. this is an old thread, but still a relevant discussion!

If anyone in the SF Bay area would like to test a Canon 1.4X-II or a Kenko Teleplus Pro 300 (prior to Kenko DG and DGX, IIRC) with EF mount lens on their RF body, I'd be happy to participate by providing either/both for testing.
