I've been usign a 4gb card on my 5D. When empty the camera indicates I can fit about 242 raw images on it.

I've just bought a new 16gb card. Its been formatted in camera and reports 15.4 free after formatting. However, when shooting, the camera indicates I can fit 484 images on the card. Thus it appears to be suggesting it only using 8gb of the card.

Does anyone know if 8gb is the maximum card size the 5D will work with? Anyway round it? Is using the 16gb card as an 8gb card secure?

Thanks

Geoff

all i can say is, i use an 8gb and that gives me the same indicated number of shots.

try shooting all the way up and then just see if it will go further?

as far as i know there is no limit... in the manual is states that all cf cards and even micro-drives of 2gb and upwards can be used! and 16gb microdrives have been around since the camera was started.

strange...

I recall another thread for a couple days ago. The person had the same problem you do. The limit, I believe is 8GB.

shooting with CF cards annoys me, i think the smaller cf card + portable storage unit is far greater... shooting with a 2gb extreme IV will have lightning performance. so i dont really think its an issue.

Having a 5D and a Mark III and 8 and 16GB cards, I can say that you can't use a 16GB card in the 5D. Maybe if you format it in the computer or something, but if you reformat it in the field in the camera, you are screwed.

I use the 8 in the 5D and the 16 in the Mark III. I especially use the fast 266X 8GB cards in the Mark III since they write so darn much faster.........

If you format a 16 GB card in-camera, the 5D can only handle an 8 GB partition. If you were to format it only in a computer, you'd get the full 16 GB and around 960 photos showing on the display. Now that you've formatted it on the 5D, follow the link Tsmith provided and undo the "damage" you did by formatting in camera to regain that missing 8 GB.
