As the tile says

I have not posted here for a long while but lurked a lot

My main interest is landscape/buildings with a large dash of coal fired steamy things

http://www.nsmee.com (external link) give you the idea None of my work on that site ( thats were I play )

I have a 17- 40 L series lens that is my main workhouse glass

so what is it to be £600 for the 450D or £700 for the 40D

The one point is the weight of the 40D

Anyway fire a way guys

my 350d looks like its gone to its maker in the sky , they are saying things like beyond economical repair ( it would cost nearly as much as i paid ) that why I need another body ( camera that is )

If you liked the size, and handling of the 350D, then the 450D would seem like a sensible replacement. You're not going to get better image quality from the 40D, and many of the cool things from the 40D are included on the 450D - like spot metering, ISO in viewfinder, etc.

450D don't seems like a bad camera at all, but the 40D is nicer built. I don't know?

Hard to say as the 450 is not out yet so there is no real world comparisons to make but it’s a pretty safe bet that either will work just fine. When you say weight, are you liking it lighter or heavier?

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

my wife will also use the camera as she is small 5 foot tall the lest weight would be better it may be not just a weight thing more about size ( opps better to be care full )

the 450d is approx 500 grams and the 40d is 700 ish body only

with the L glass on the front the weight rises quickly

thanks for the replies

so what is it to be £600 for the 450D or £700 for the 40D

For such a small $ difference the 40D wins hands down.

Wait a few weeks, its rumoured the 40D will have a £100 rebate soon (March 1st) along with lots of other stuff. Also if you buy from Kerso + rebate your looking at £550 for the 40D!

I agree.

I just upgraded a Rebel XT for a 40D and wish I had had a choice between the 40D and the Rebel XSi. I might have still picked the 40D, but then again...

Lordedmond, I am in a similar situation as you and here are my thoughts thus far. I am deciding between the 450D and the 40D. So far the pros I see of choosing the 40D over the 450D are as follows: better feel/build quality, faster FPS (6.5 vs. 3.5), higher shutter speed (1/8000th vs. 1/4000th), higher ISO range (3200 vs. 1600), better battery life, and a top LCD and rear dial (which some people prefer). Also, I don't know about the 450D but several parts of the 40D are weather sealed such as the battery door, memory card slot and the I/O ports.

So you just have to ask yourself if the £100 is worth the extra features above, do you want or need any of them? For some the extra "quality" feel of the 40D would be enough (I haven't held either but just from various comments). Either way the lens/photographer make the biggest difference to the quality of your pictures and I highly doubt that you can do wrong with either choice.

Well I could not have put it better they will BOTH do a good job the price diff is not important at all , looks like its down to feel , its a bit difficult getting to a store my wheels make getting around town a bit difficult.

the point you made with ref to the seals had not occurred to me should keep the steam out LOL

Weather sealing shouldn't really be factored in to this decision. Neither camera is sealed enough to make a difference. While I have no doubt the 450D will be a solid camera, the 40D is simply a better camera. If the price difference is not a sticking point for you, and you don't need or really want the smaller size of the 450D, then I'd suggest the 40D without hesitation. It is a wonderful camera.

If you find the 40D so good, why selling it?

I also do not believe that the sealing should be a factor. Canon also doesn’t claim that the 40D s weather sealed, but has better seals. In reality the seal is just a little fuzzy gasket that probably helps a bit with dust, but I think water would have no problem getting through.
