I am beginning to like this lens a lot ... took this with Sigma 30 mm f/1.4 on XTi (1/13th, f/1.4, ISO 1600). I think it's impressive for 10:07 pm light conditions ....

That is one of the main reasons that I like fast glass!

I completely agree. This lens is so underated. I know that there are a lot of people who get bad copies of the lens that front-focus.

But, I think the lens is worth at least a consideration. It is a great focal length on an crop body and if you get a good copy of the lens it is absolutely stunning! I have more fun with this lens than I do with the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS. But the 17-55mm is on my camera 90% of the time because of it's versatility.

This photo makes me more eager for the arrival of mine.

I've read some of the reviews from folks who received a bad copy. But I figure there are more people out there who have received good copies (you just don't hear from them so much) so odds are in my favor (knock on wood). Worse case scenario I just send it in to Sigma for calibration.

I'm an early adopter and love mine!

I think a lot of the "front focus" reports may actually be people trying to autofocus inside of the minimum focus distance, or there just isn't enough light/contrast for autofocus.

From Sigma's site:
Minimum Focusing Distance 40cm / 15.7 inches

I cant agree with that.
If its under the minimum focus distance then it wont focus. thats not front or back focus.
This is sort of like the posts that went round when the lens first came out. lots of people have great copies but when someone posts a problem with theirs all the people that had good copies would blame user error.
No offence meant.
Ive had two. the first (on a 350D) was fine inside at all f stops. once i tried shooting outside, at distances of, say, 20ft+ at f/5.6-f/8 it would front or back focus. i never tested it properly, if it wont focus i dont care what it does, it goes back to the shop. (Sigma wanted me to send the lens and my camera to them).
Second one i had (about a year later, 30D this time) did almost the same thing.
I will try another one at some point but feel nervous at the thought of owning one again.
