I really want to expand my kit away from just one light that i have now. I was thinking:

4x Canon 540EZ's and 420EZ's
4x Stands
2x White Bounce Umbrellas
Various Snoots
Gels
1x White/Gold Reflector
4x Pocket Wizards or Similar
Some clamps

Just wondering what everyone set up is for Strobist work (Prefer Speedlight based kits) and how much did it set you back?

I haven't used PWs but I'm very happy with my Skyports.

Why EZs? They don't offer any significant advantage over other non-EX strobes. They're manual-only; you can use Vivitar 285s, for instance, in Auto-thyristor mode as well.

Did you see anything about the Vivitar 285HV's being discontinued? That's what I've heard and apparently they're becoming hard to find. I don't believe it's just a rumor.

Sunpak 383's are a good Vivitar substitute. $80 and fully manual.

My kit:

2 Vivitar 285HV's
Canon 580EX II (for those times when I need an on camera flash)
2 Light stands (ordering a 3rd this week)
3 umbrellas shoot through prefered.
Home Depot heavy duty clamps fashioned with a screw to mount the umbrella bracket
4 PW's
Various other crap

Keep in mind you'll need 5 PW's if you want to be able to fire all four flashes at once. One needs to be on the camera. Skyports are a viable alternative. If I already wouldn't have had two PW's, I probably would have went with them. It's about $720 of my kit in radio triggers vs. $360. I could have saved a bit.

Haven't seen, but haven't looked either. They were picked as a widely-known model with functionality the EZs lack AFAIK.

Less gear, more brain, better light.

that post is from feb 18, 2006... ;)
B&H still lists the 285hv as in stock

My stobist kit consists of:
1x Vivitar 285hv
1x Nikon SB-80DX
1x compact light stand
2x pocket wizards
1x double fold umbrella
plus a bunch of ball bungies and plastic clamps
then i've got my elinchrom ranger rx pack, that's pretty portable, not sure if it counts though :)
For speedlights though, the SB-80dx is a great light, and can be picked up for around $120-150. They make the same power as a 580ex or SB800 as well and they even have an optical slave and go down to 1/128th power.

I'd definitely advise against old Canon units: you can get Nikons with both built-in PC sync ports and optical slaves, as well as auto-thyristor exposure.

You tell the flash what aperture and ISO you're using, and it uses a small light sensor to judge when it's time to stop pumping out light. It's surprisingly accurate, but only really useful in simple situations with a single light. I tend to use manual on a regular basis, to avoid the variability that any type of autoflash introduces...

Well then i dont need Auto, I will be only using these flashes off camera in Manual mode. I use my 580EX II for on camera work. I have a CPE4 so thats what attracts me to canon, the ability to add extra power to the lights. Does anyone know what stops the 540EZ goes up in?

IE is it: 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 or 1/2 + 1/3, 1/2 + 2/3 etc like the 580EX is.
Also what is its lowest output available?
