Hi,

I was going to sell this camera on craig's list or something along those lines, but I just prefer it so much more to my A560 because of the additional settings (Av, Tv, etc.). Anyway, so here's the problem - sometimes when I power this bad boy, this happens -

However sometimes it fully retracts perfectly! Sooo any idea what type of issue this is? Do you think it could feasibly be fixed by a local camera store or would it require me contacting Canon (and should they actually be able to fix it, I assume the cost will probably exceed the market value of the camera, ha ha).

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

The only time that happens to me...new a570 is whaen the batteries are absoultley dead. I would assume you use fully charged batteries, other then that maybe check the inside of battery compartment for corrosion on contacts.

Waittt, I just opened a pack of brand new batteries (was using rechargeable ones) and it seems to have remedied the issue . . . hmmm, will test it out some more. Hopefully just my (apparently near-dying) rechargeable batteries have been the cause of this issue all along.
Thanks again.

Maybe, try sending the canon tech people an email with the pic. I would imagine they might have seen it before.

I have an A510 which displayed the same symptoms after carrying it around in my shirt breast pocket. Dragging it out fast, or just general in-the-pocket friction / snagging buggered the retractable lens cover. I worked the two spring-loaded leaves back and forth with a cocktail stick (chewed and dried the pointy bit to make it blunt and soft lest it brushed the lens) and it went back to behaving itself. Worth a try . . . .

Hmmm, will definitely try that although I've been doing something similar with the tips of my fingernails to no avail! Thanks for the suggestion though!

Hey all, new poster here. I used to have an a510 that did the same thing. I took a pencil and rubbed a little bit of graphite on the lens cover pieces, to give it a bit of dry lube. Worked like a champ after it cycled a few times, and is still working for my friend that bought it from me. Hope this helps!

Ooo that's quite a novel idea and I'm going to try to definitely try that!
Gee I hope one of these suggestions works . . . my poor poor camera!
