hey guys

the 70-200 2.8 non IS i bought came in today.

the first thing i noticed when i compared it to my friends 70-200 2.8 IS is that the barrel (the metal part) seems to have some side to side play.

maybe a mm or two. i do not think this is normal.

the lens itself works fine, takes tack sharp pics, but the wobbling barrel bothers me.

can i take it apart myself and repair this? i have come across a guide online of someone taking apart their 70-200.

thanks

Wouldn't taking it apart void the warranty? If it's brand new, personally I wouldn't think that's a wise idea.

This *IS* normal. If it takes "tack-sharp pics" to quote your statement, what is the problem?

no i bought it used off a member on FM. its quite an old lens so i believe its expected.

the warranty is gone, i really think the screws inside holding in the barrel have just loosened over time.

No, it's NOT normal. My 70-200 non IS does not wobble at all.

i think Titusvillesurfer is getting mixed up with the body / lens movement.

my problem is movement here:

eryk, I went and doublechecked again and my lens doesn't move at the focus ring at all. I think you should have it look at or fix since that is where the lens moves the most. If something is loose, it's bound to get looser over time.

maybe a mm or two

If it actually has this much play, it is broke and falling apart.
