When you get them, put them on the charger and hit the refresh button. Let the charger take it right down to nothing before the first charge. Shouldn't take long cause they do not come charged, but this flushes it and it seems to make a difference. I have been pleasantly surprised with mine. They will hold a charge for weeks if you do not use them and will easily get 3000 shots with some moderate chimping. I do not use IS lenses, so that might run them down faster if you do. Overall though, they have been well worth the cost I paid. :)

Matt, I went to a Motox race for the first time in years a couple weeks ago and needed some advice. Check out the Motorsports Photography Forum and the Discuss Motorsports Photography Forum. there are Sticky threads in those two that will really help you be ready.

My advice is to take all your memory cards and all your lenses and make sure all your batteries are topped off. Those are the basics. :)

I know motorsports is not street cycling, but they have some good tips on how to frame, what speeds to shoot at to get motion in the wheels and the bikes sharp and so on. Good stuff to know.

All......just wondering about a recent shoot I did with the Mark II N + 70-200 2.8 IS. It was an NHL pre-season game I was asked to shoot, and while I wished I had a 300 2.8, I shot with what I have. I just find the images didn't look as good as I expected, moreso when displayed a bit larger.

I shot all in Manual Mode:

2.8
1/640-1-1250
ISO 800-1600
Varying single point focus
IS was OFF
AI Servo

I'm not sure if they didn't hit focus as well as it led me to believe. Any thoughts on what to for the next shoot?

The full gallery is here with EXIF. All were tweaked in LR.

I think in a medium sized gallery they show quite well, I was just a little curious as the out of camera hockey shots I did on my 30D seemed sharper and cleaner.

To me it looks like you pushed the 1dMKII to the edge. The high iso shows its fault with a lot of noise which is taking away from your sharpness. Try running your photos through a noise filter program, I use nik filters.
Otherwise I think they look great. You stopped the action right on.

Scott your zen gallery work is sharp and i think right on. Colors look great and good freeze on the action. I guess if you want to go bigger then an 8x10 you will need more pixels. But everything you do should be fine with the 8 pixels.

Thank you, Kurt!

I do have a trial of NeatImage where I can touch a pic at a time...but I'm not sure what settings I should use for the high ISOs.

Anyone have any recommendations on those settings?

I need some advise guys, I have a 1D Mark II. I am thinking of selling it for a 7D. I have a 5D Mark II and i love the ISO on it. but it is slower then dirty. I feel the ISO on the 1D Mark II is not half as good as the 5D. Do you guys think i should sell my 1D and replace it with a 7D.

thanks for the input.

Wait and see what real 7D is like in real life from real users' tests. Don't make a decision based on marketing and pre-production test shots. My 1D II blows my 40D away on the noise front despite being much older. Wait and see.

I haven't had any experience with the 5D2 so I'm quite happy with my 1D2's high ISO performance but it still remains to be seen if the 7D's is good in real world situations. Those prototype ones people were posting during the week didn't seem too flash in the OOF areas but the detail was there throughout.

I said I was going to do the same thing, then I went to a MotoX race, [LInk in my footer] and last weekend, a classic carraige event. 2600+ plus shots at the moto cross races, and I got dusted with dust and thrown dirt clods a number of times. I was glad I had a fully weatherproofed body. I don't think my 40D would have faired as well. And I know no other camera could have done as well in the action shots. The only better body for sports would be the 1D MkIII and I am only guessing at that. Keep yours till the 7D proves itself first.

I think you guys are right. I will wait and see what the real world reports are like for the 7D. In a perfect world i would just wait a little more and replace my 1D Mark II with the new 1D Mark IV when it comes out.

Thanks again for the input guys.

Yes, go with newer 1D series, i have 1D mkiiN and i am so happy with it, but the IQ from my 1D3 is better and i am very happy, the only camera that i will replace 1D2N or 1D3 will be for sure the new upcoming 1D camera.
