I went out and test drove my new 1D MkII during the homecoming parade! What a sweet body! Wow!

I figured I would share some first examples from it. Nothing fancy...just some snapshots from the parade. Just some USM applied. I didn't even bother to straighten horizons. No C&C necessary, unless you have tips specific to the 1D MkII. Thanks!

Play with the personal functions, you'll find some stuff that you'll make a lot of use of. I found it really handy to have the on/off switch for the rear wheel lock all exposure settings so I couldn't accidentally bump anything when shooting sports indoors. The title of the P.Fn is a bit counter intuitive though as it just says it disables the main dial as well, but it disables ISO, white balance, everything. Very handy when you have everything set up right and don't want to accidentally mess with it. :)

It's a lovely camera, have fun!

I really need to read through my manual again. I'd love to have that set for concerts.

They look great! I didn't see the exif info. Care to elaborate on the settings?

Based on the settings, there's tons of recommendation :)

I'm glad you like the body. Did you hit the backlight button yet? (don't say what it is, that's the running secret on the forum :) ;) )

I've got a 1D2, and I'm not bothered by the smaller LCD over the "N". Overall the 1D2's are phenomenal machines. I hope I can hold onto mine, I'm going through some financial difficulties lately **sigh**

I would have to double check tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure they were :
ISO 200, S/S 320-400, f/8, AI Servo, One shot, and M

All were shot in RAW and with m 70-200 f/2.8.

I just got done with the football game. Haven't really had time to edit the images, but at first glance, they look okay. Focus was great, as expected! They're just noisier than I am used to after my 50D. I was forced to shoot at ISO 3200 just to get S/S of 1/320 and 1/400. Even then, they were 1/3 - 2/3 underexposed.

Do y'all run your images through noise software before you PP or after you PP? I have Noise Ninja Pro. I usually do it after everything else is all done, but I'm curious what everyone else does. Thanks for the input!

BTW, I love it!!! The shutter sounds amazing, the 8.5 fps blows me away, and the AF is unbelievable. Out of 178 images from the game, only 2 were OOF. Gotta love that! I look forward to enjoying mine for a long while to come!

....okay.....I hit the backlight button on my 1D2.....and....the backlight came on. Then after a few seconds it went off. Somehow, I was not moved to say, "wow". Obviously, I'm missing something here !

I think he was talking about the color (which I though was damn cool too).

I was being a tad sarcastic...

Although it is 100 times nicer than the backlight on my 50D and on my Rebel XSi before that.

I turned it on last night at the football game, but in the parking lot where it was pretty much pitch black, and it is sweet. Much nicer and easier to see than the 50D.

So far the only thing I miss from my 50D is the LCD; but that's not a huge deal to me.

If my images need it, I'll do light NR first, then work the other processing.

Okay, thank you for that!

I'm wondering if it might not be better to do NR first and then do my levels, contrast, saturation, crop, and USM afterwards. Get rid of as much noise as possible and then you sharpen last. I may try it with the images from this game just to see. Maybe I'll try it both ways and compare...who knows?

resize for final output then sharpen, that's what works well for me as the last steps.

So you would do NR before?

Yup, that's what I do. You might want to experiment with your workflow a bit. What works for me, might not be what works for you :)

I just need a quick clarification to ensure I'm lacking on technique and not missing something in the technical side. If I switch AF to the * button I focus with it but tapping/holding then let go, recompose and fire the frame with the regular shutter button right? (as in this is the proper technical way of working this set up) I'm just having trouble getting sharp shots with this method and wondering if I'm doing something wrong.

Thanks
