if you're shooting wide open with a shallow DOF, focus and recompose will throw your focus off.

it would be best to use all 45 AF points and pick the one that gets the closest to what you want in focus.

I just need a quick clarification to ensure I'm lacking on technique and not missing something in the technical side. If I switch AF to the * button I focus with it but tapping/holding then let go, recompose and fire the frame with the regular shutter button right? (as in this is the proper technical way of working this set up) I'm just having trouble getting sharp shots with this method and wondering if I'm doing something wrong.

Thanks

Are you tracking a moving subject in AI Servo? If so, you will want to hold the * button down while firing the shutter.

No C&C necessary, unless you have tips specific to the 1D MkII. Thanks!

Congrats. The first thing I do when I got the 1D was to go into menu and disable shoot without cf card. Then set the CF-4-1, then set to 11 AF points or 9 points. Then shoot away :)

For Jpg, I up the contrast to 4, color tone to 0 or -1 and sat to +1.

Have fun.

I have been wanting a Mark IIn for some time now. I am trying to decide between the 7d and the 1d Mark IIn. I shoot with a 30d currently. Most of my photography has been my kid's sports, karate, soccer, football, etc. My 30d just does not keep up with the autofocus.

Today a friend lent me his Mark II to try over the weekend. I can't wait. Football game tomorrow. I have a 70-200 f/2.8L, 300 f/4L and a 17-40 f/4L. Out of the 70-200 and 300 which should I put on the Mark II and which on the 30d? I may just switch them around to try both.

Thanks,

Mike

Those look great. I can't believe I see posts complaining about the noise @ iso 3200 with the Mk IIn. I will take those any day.

Shot it at +1EV, brought it back down in lightroom which helps kill some of the noise, then adjusted curves and other small adjustments and finally ran it through noise ninja.

Any special settings in NN? I am a NN virgin.

thanks

How do you like the 1.4x with the MK II and 70-200? I tried the 1.4x and 70-200 f/2.8 on my 30d and the shots were all too soft. As soon as I took off the 1.4x all was better.

Thank you! I disabled shoot without cf card and set to 11 points. I never shooot Jpg, so no worries there! I'm loving it so far!

Here are some shots from last night's football game. Junior high finally got to play under the lights and it gave a great opportunity to try my Mk II out before tonight's varsity football game.

I tried NN first, and a little bit of levels, contrast, and saturation. For sharpening, I used TLR sharpening action, Creative High Pass, and painted sharpening in just the areas I wanted.

Exif is: ISO 3200, 1/320 or 1/400, f/2.8. I used AI Servo, expanded center point, and M (except for 1st one in Av). Not too bad, I think.

Not sure if the images at 3200 are as good as my 50D. The last one is from my 50D for comparision.

And one from my 50D: ISO 6400, 1/ 400, f/2.8

They just don't seem as sharp as I'd thought, but maybe that is just from Noise Ninja, which I ran in a batch, auto profiled, and default settings.

Any tips on sharpening would be much appreciated!

Okay, thank you for that!

I'm wondering if it might not be better to do NR first and then do my levels, contrast, saturation, crop, and USM afterwards. Get rid of as much noise as possible and then you sharpen last. ...

Yes!

Yes!

Okay, are you sure? LOL

I kind of played around with it today. Doing NR first did seem to make a big difference in getting rid of noise. I did some images with NR first and the same ones with NR last. There was a lot less noise with NR first and not really any difference in sharpness, that I could tell. I will continue to use NR first and then do the rest of my work flow. Thank you, CDS!

My 1DIIn hasn't seen a lot of use since I got the 5DMKII. So today, I got it out to shoot some bird shots before the birds migrate south.

Even though these aren't super challenging shots, I was reminded again what a nice job my 1DIIn can do.:)

Pictures were shot in Faithful mode with slight sharpening. I guess I like the somewhat softer effect.

It's going to snow tonight here...Can you believe it??!! I'm not ready for winter.

By the way, with 2,000 some posts and a 120K views I'm surprised this thread hasn't become a sticky?

I had the same issue with my 30D. I tried it once and didn't like the results at all. It was better with my 40D (a little better AF in that camera) but I have no issues with it at all on my IIN. Can hardly tell the difference with or without.

Now if I would just gt my 120-300 back and have it actually focus I would be a totally happy camper.
