What it does is that it makes the field of focus much clearer than the standard screen, so it helps if you want to manually focus the lens for the most accurate focus. Trade off is that it's a darker screen, so it makes your viewfinder around 10% darker to look through. That's why it's only recommended for f/2.8 glass or faster. Name is Peter and here is my gear:

I switched from a D300 to a 5D and couldn't stand the focusing issues so I waited patiently for a great deal on a low millage 1D Mk II and scored myself one fantastic camera. I lurked on here for a while before pulling the trigger but it was all of the advice from you guys that pushed me to buy, so thank you all.
