Any of you guys have experience with EC-S focusing screen? Is it exclusively used for manual focusing only?

I have one installed in my 1D3. It's not just for manual focusing. What it does is that it makes the field of focus much clearer than the standard screen, so it helps if you want to manually focus the lens for the most accurate focus. Trade off is that it's a darker screen, so it makes your viewfinder around 10% darker to look through. That's why it's only recommended for f/2.8 glass or faster.

Name is Peter and here is my gear:
Canon 5D II, Canon 7D, Canon 40D
Glass - Zeiss 21 f/2.8 ZE, Canon 35 f/1.4L, Canon 40 f/2.8 STM, Canon 24-70 f/2.8
L, Canon 85 f/1.2L II, Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, Canon 500 f/4L IS

Well since I have lenses 2.8 and wider you think I should go get one just in case?

Will it affect how I meter a scene?

Yes, it has an impact, so just make sure to change which screen you have in your personal settings on the camera, and the camera will compensate for it.

Great shot of the Robin. Nailed the focus and exposure. Very sharp.

I'm starting to get a little frustrated with the buffer when shooting RAW.. Im using Ultra II cards, would an Extreme III (or any faster) card benefit on the MkII or no?

Take a look here: http://www.robgalbraith.com …ti_page.asp?cid=6007-6896 (external link)

Clearing the buffer is a function of the camera's ability to write to the card, not the rated speed of the card. So getting the latest, fastest card may not necessarily help.

First of all I would like to say hi to everyone here in the 1D club. I switched from a D300 to a 5D and couldn't stand the focusing issues so I waited patiently for a great deal on a low millage 1D Mk II and scored myself one fantastic camera. I lurked on here for a while before pulling the trigger but it was all of the advice from you guys that pushed me to buy, so thank you all.

Now I have a couple of questions that, try as I might, couldn't find using search. So, how big of an SD card can I use in my 1DMkII? I'm a wedding shooter and I would love to use a 32gb SD card as my constant, in camera backup. How can I access the personalized custom functions and change my name on an iMac running SL? I also just switched to Mac and since I didn't receive the software disk with my 1D I'm not sure how this is going to work. And lastly, which 3rd party batteries work the best?

Thank you all for taking the time to answer these and I'm sure my future questions. Also, if there is a place where this info is readily available I have overlooked, please point me in that direction.

-Chris

To change the name you will need a firewire connection to the camera and the Canon EOS Utility, which can be downloaded from Canon's support site.

A compact flash card will give you faster speeds than an SD card will if you care about frame rate buffers. Otherwise, SDHC cards work with the 1DmkII and the max I used in mine is an 8gb. I've heard others using 16gb.

I am using this battery in my camera right now and I love it for the price. I took over 800 shots with it in cold weather before having to recharge. It believe it's a rebranded Black Diamond. Fitment is great.

I need to stay out of the buy/sell forum. It's burning a hole in the wallet...

Since I just got a 1D mark2 I thought I would share a shot on this thread. Great camera seems to take a nicer looking image than my 50D at low ISO.

Taken with 70-200 2.8

Are you spraying and praying? you have a buffer of 20 frames there.

No, you would not get any enhanced performance by using Extreme III cards since the 1D Mk II's max write speed is around 8/Mbps and UltraII cards are capable of write speeds of up to 10/Mbps (at least the newer Ultra II cards are, the older ones were 5/Mbps if I am not mistaken.).
