I haven't tested it thoroughly yet. I even haven't tested it with portraits. Next week I have shoot with a someone whom I've worked with a few weeks ago.

Hopefully the lens will deliver.

I'm soon to receive my 1DMK2N and will be getting some SD cards for both in-camera backup to a CF card and also as the only main card.

So I'm wondering about your SD experiences in the MK2N .. which cards offer best speed, how do you format the over 2GB cards, any cards to avoid, etc.

I'm using Sandisk Extreme III 8GB CF cards, and the original owner left a Sandisk Optima Pro "240 HD" 16GB SDHC card in the camera for me. :)

I haven't tried high frame rate shooting yet, but I will say the 16GB SDHC card formats in camera a lot quicker than the Extreme III CF card does. Strange..

No problems formatting up to 16GB in camera over, and over for me. I also have a 32GB Kingston 133x Elite Pro CF card that formats in camera without issues as well.

Are you spraying and praying? you have a buffer of 20 frames there.

No, you would not get any enhanced performance by using Extreme III cards since the 1D Mk II's max write speed is around 8/Mbps and UltraII cards are capable of write speeds of up to 10/Mbps (at least the newer Ultra II cards are, the older ones were 5/Mbps if I am not mistaken.).

Not spray and pray, but shooting hockey at times, a bit of action will happen at one time and found once or twice that the buffer was too full to shoot. (Not at all a common occurrence ;) )

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check my card since it is probably 2-3 yrs old now.

Thanks .. good to know the larger sizes are OK, I'm probably just going to get a single very large SD card for JPEG sports use in winter, and use that same card as a JPEG backup card to the primary CF card's RAW files in summer with weddings.

Sounds like a plan. The one benefit of the "N" model over mine, to shoot RAW to one card and JPEG's to the other. Nice feature.

Enjoy!

Thank you so much for the information. I had tried connecting via FireWire on my Win7 box but it never worked. So I followed your advice and downloaded the Canon EOS Utility Upgrade (they do not make the regular software available, only the upgrades) and went HERE (external link) to make "Upgrade" into a regular install. Then, just like everything else Mac, it just worked.

I've read some good stuff about those batteries but there also seems to be some not so good reviews. But for the price and a 1 year warranty, I'm gonna give them a go.

@MackDaddy1962 Thanks for confirming my suspicion that the MkII can use 32gb SD cards, very exciting to know that I'll never have to worry about loosing a card again.

To change the name you will need a firewire connection to the camera and the Canon EOS Utility, which can be downloaded from Canon's support site.

A compact flash card will give you faster speeds than an SD card will if you care about frame rate buffers. Otherwise, SDHC cards work with the 1DmkII and the max I used in mine is an 8gb. I've heard others using 16gb.

I am using this battery in my camera right now and I love it for the price. I took over 800 shots with it in cold weather before having to recharge. It believe it's a rebranded Black Diamond. Fitment is great.

I'm currently using 4GB San Disk Ultra II SD cards and 8GB San Disk Ultra II CF cards. I've found the SD cards to format quicker and to clear out the buffer ever so slightly quicker even though all my cards have the same write speed (probably has to do with comparing 4GB vs 8GB cards). Usually I'll have the SD card as my main with the CF in there to easily switch over to or as my backup card.

Nice pictures Omaru. I like the second one for it's abstract appearance.
