Add one more ladies and gentlemen :D

Just won a Mark II for around $860 from ebay (from KEH's profile). It comes with all the accessories, it's in excellent condition (KEH rating) and comes with a few extra batteries!

I do a lot of photojournalism, especially sports, and I wanted another camera to have so I don't miss any shots (as doing so costs me money) and one that has the speed and quick af which is required for photojournalism. I plan on using it as a "backup" :D.

Anyone have any advice? My main camera now is a 40D w/grip.

I can't wait to get that feel of a professionally built body and speed in my hands, I never thought I would actually come close to buying one, but I pulled the trigger.

Thoughts/prayers?

I have a feeling the 1D2 will become your main and your 40D will be the backup ;) :p

Any advice? I think you'll soon find that your 40D becomes your backup, that is the case for me. Enjoy!

There are still things the 40D can do that the 1D Mark II cannot. I needed to do some silly shots holding the camera above my head today and live view came in handy (almost never does but today it was needed). The Mark III has live view but not the Mark II... And the extra reach of the 1.6x 40D is useful at times too; they make a good pair for sure.

I just joined the club with a Mk IIn, yay me!

Couple of questions, any tips for settings for wildlife and for landscapes, how do you set yours? Coming from a 40D I'm a little overwhelmed by the number of custom functions. And yes I have searched a bit, but not really found what I'm looking for. Back button focus was a no brainer, but a few tips for other setting for for both landscape and wildlife settings would be very helpful. Such as what to do with all those glorious focus points.

Could someone also walk me through setting the personal functions. Manual say something about Camera Window, but as usual is pretty vague. And when it comes to computers I'm pretty simple:rolleyes:

Also for planning sake, what kind of money does Canon get for shutter replacement should I need it.

$200-300 for a shutter I hear. Hopefully they'll keep supporting it for a while, CPS Canada has dropped support for it as a pro body as it is too old. At over 56000 clicks I hope mine has a lot more life left in it (the way I'm using it, 7000 clicks/month, it should last me a while, again I hope).

Personal functions for the most part can only be set via PC with Firewire cable (not Vista or Windows 7 64-bit). A few can be set in the camera. I came from a 40D (still have and use it too) as well and I shoot a lot of birds and some landscapes and my settings for custom and personal functions are:

Exactly what I was looking for, thanks. I am still more than a little hazy about the settings of personal functions. I can't use the USB cable, has to be firewire? And where do I find what the options for the settings are?

Tinners, the nifty fifty is a nice lens on that body. The Mark I is better but even the Mark II is great bang for the buck.

jsinon, you set them using EOS Utility and Firewire only. USB is just for printing and very slow file transfer with USB 1.1. There is a menu in EOS Utility that lets you set them. The settings are mostly self explanatory and for ones which are not self explanatory there is nothing in the manual either so you just have to guess and try them out!

My 1D Mark II arrived today...too bad the battery is toast:cry: Overall the camera is in great shape! It does have some battle scars but, IMO, that is to be expected when buying a used professional camera. It is heavier than my Mark III but not by much.

Is the EOS utility downloadable from the Canon site? I'm going to pick up a new Canon battery this afternoon. After trying 3rd party batteries with my Mark III, I'm convinced the Canon batteries are superior. I'm also going to pick up a firewire cable to setup my personal settings (my biggest complaint about the 1DII is not being able to do it in camera).

The same EOS utility you use with your Mark III will work fine for the Mark II. They are fully backward compatible. Amazingly the menus for the various cameras are unique but still included. It is so odd to me that my 1D, 40D and Rebel display different UIs using the same version of the software.

Another high ISO example. This one is stretching it really. I should have used 3200 ISO to halve the shutter speed as this one was 1/200th at 530mm (100-400L IS USM with 1.4x II) at f/8 1600 ISO (I should have zoomed out a touch more as I chopped off the feathers of the tail a bit, dagnabbit) in challenging light. I got other pictures of him without chopping the tail off but the expression on this one was the best:
