The same EOS utility you use with your Mark III will work fine for the Mark II. They are fully backward compatible. Amazingly the menus for the various cameras are unique but still included. It is so odd to me that my 1D, 40D and Rebel display different UIs using the same version of the software.

Great! Thank you! I have a new battery and found the EOS Utility CD that came with my 1D3.

Can you set your name etc in the camera? I was able to do it with the EOS Utility on my 40D with the usb cable. When I plug in the 1D Mk 2n the same way and start EOS utility doesn't give me the option to control camera. Do I need the firewire cable for that as well as the personal functions?

Also, heard so much about the auto focus on the 1 series, how is it for close-up work. The one thing I can think of off the top of my head that I will miss moving from 40D to 1D Mk 2n, is live view for up close focusing.

Well, you could always keep both of them, and have the best of both worlds.

 (devil's advocate..lol)

That would be nice, but 40D went bye bye to pay for 1D:D

I just picked up a 1d MarkIIn for $650, quite a smokin' deal. Unfortunately I'm having some intermittent issues with it. It works like a charm and then all of a sudden it will "Err 99" when I attempt to take a picture. I found that by turning it off and removing and replacing the battery then putting the cam in sensor cleaning mode it seems to fix it. Anyone have any ideas? I've done a hard reset and that hasn't cured it completely.

Thanks for that. Staples is right around the corner, they must have them as well. If not BB isn't too far.

How old are your batteries? Are they holding a good charge? Mine will do that once in a while when the battery is almost flat.

Yeah you may want to check your batteries. It seems to be a known issue that when the batteries age and don't hold a charge that the 1D2 will start throwing random Err99's.

Here's my attempt at making a couple flowery desktop background images with my 1D2 and 24-70 :)
