Been running into a banding issue and excessive noise on mine in recent times. Seems to happen at ISO 1600 intermittently with one shot coming out just fine as it did when I first got my body and the next getting bands in the image in different locations each time and and a few times throughout the whole image. It only seems to happen every now and then but it's been getting more common and progressively worse.

Might be time to see if this Mack warranty is actually worth anything ???.

100% crop from one image at ISO 1600 without any exposure pushing in post. The lines are faintly visible and run all the way horizontally across the lower half of the original image.

Maybe contact a tech at Canon, first? You can email or call in:

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=SupportDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=226&modelid=9808 (external link)

It's worth you taking a note of the contact details of Desiree, the Customer Relations Supervisor for Mack; she can answer any specific questions regarding the warranties and can be reached via email at span style="color:#0000ff;"helpdesk@mackcam.com (external link)

If you run into problems, you can of course drop me an email.

Do you think I could get enough from them to get the 70-200?

Probably not, but theres always the 70-210 f/3.5-4.5. Very fast focusing, good colors and sharp wide open at the short end (less so at the long end, but just stop it down to f/5.6)

Likely what I'll be doing since I'm coming up on a break in shooting.

As I continued going through shots from the last show I found a few more where I had the issue I mentioned above.

I pulled exposure up on both crops so that it's easier to see. They were one right after the other in a quick series of 3 shots and exposure remained the same throughout as did the lighting. Crops are both in the same part of image.

First one with a checker board of lines like this throughout the rest of the image.

IMAGE: http://arroshotz.smugmug.com/photos/892789007_T5rLS-L.jpg

Second one without the checker board effect but still had a single line going through the image which is visible at bottom of crop.
IMAGE: http://arroshotz.smugmug.com/photos/892788928_BGVXs-L.jpg

Having had over 50,000 images go through my 1D2 with a large percentage of them being at ISO 1600 in these kind of conditions, I have not experienced this before.

Anyways, here's a clean ISO 1600 shot without the issue from this past weekend. I call it "The Sleeping Elephant"

Oooo, now I see why so many profess their love of the 135L. That bee shot steals the thunder from your first two!

Magic indeed, 135L f/2 3200 ISO in wicked stage lights, these could have been better but I don't have enough experience in shooting stage stuff:

.....Anyone able to tell me about the Adorama Used ones. Do they do sensor cleans etc before selling them or is that something I'd have to organize? Anything I should look out for? All comments so far about them make me confident in buying from them.

Yes, we check all sensors. Any sensor that’s dirty gets cleaned by our professionally trained personnel.
All the staff have been sent to Nippon for training on cleaning sensors, but anything we can’t clean ourselves we send out for repair.

Do email me directly if you need any other help or advice.

harry- how do you feel the 135mm f2 compares against the 70-200 f2.8 IS? I am going to be selling my tokina 11-16 and can't decide if i want to try and get one of those, or maybe the tamron 28-75 and pocket the rest, or possibly a 5d classic for weddings. Somethign about me just doesn't trust the high iso of these 1d's...at least as not as much as i'd like to at least. maybe it's something I'm doing wrong...but then I look at the 5d classic's AF system and it makes me wanna barf. blaa...thoughts?

btmlinedan - If you decide on the Tamron 28-75, let me know as ill have one for sale real soon...(as soon as the Canon 28-70 f2.8 gets here that i just bought). The Tamron takes GREAT photos! I just wanted to match my other L lens's :) Can see a pic taken with this Tamron on page 343 of this thread, the red "drag bike".

As far as the higher ISO, i know you didn't ask me, but i don't care for the high ISO on my 1DII, I don't take it past 1250 unless i HAVE TO....

I've never owned a 70-200 so I can't compare the two. I needed f/2 for low light, and love the bokeh and depth of field that you can only get with the extra stop that you can't get with a zoom. It is great for indoors sports, headshot portraits and so on.

In that Tamron's range I got the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L USM and I just love it. The build, the sharpness, the bokeh, it is just a wonderful lens. I did look at the Tamron at the same time since it is about 1/3rd the price and much smaller and lighter but I really need the build of the Canon for outdoor sports use so that's what I got. For the same reason I won't be getting a 5D as I need the features of the 1D. I might get a 1DsII however...

For me, at high ISO I do trust my 1D Mark II -- I regularly use it at 1600 and even 3200 is used without hesitation. By exposing properly I find the noise is not bad at all, very easy to clean up. Underexposed the shots can be noisy for sure so you do need to be careful.

High ISO on the 1D2 is great up to 1600 and I'm at 1600 in most of my shooting, at 3200 it starts getting dodgy and need noise reduction but still can be usable depending on output. Proper exposure is key on the 1D2 for optimal noise performance.

As for lenses, I haven't personally had the opportunity to try the 135L so I can't really give any advice on that. The 70-200 2.8 IS though is quite an amazing lens and is my go to lens (but it depends what you shoot). The Tamron 28-75 is also a great lens as long as you can find a good copy as some can be a tad soft wide open along with a few having AF issues but it's uses are going to be different then the 135L or 70-200L.
