I hope you enjoyed the show. They always put on great event each year. You have some really nice shots. Post a few more. I'm slowly working through the pile I shot on Saturday.

Hey guys, just got a mk II, having some problems with the portrait shutter button however. Im pretty sure its just really super sensative but i dont want to pay 200 bucks to send it in and get it replaced so i thought id ask here. Basically it still works just that the AF point isnt halfway down, its pretty much when you barely touch it, and then even the slightest bit past that releases the shutter. If you press down all the way and then release all the way it will release the shutter twice, once on the down and once coming up. So im sorry if i didnt see the answer in this thread, i did a search. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I think the grip shutter release is often a bit more sensitive than the main one, and you should try focus with the * button instead of the shutter button.

But the double shutter fire on a single press is not normal.

My portrait shutter button is also quite sensitive, I have set it off by accident by merely brushing it. And the camera is very fast so it can take two pictures quickly in High Speed Continuous drive mode with the shutter button held down, often before I'd intended to even in standard landscape orientation. However a single press shouldn't shoot two pictures.

Does it do that in single shot drive mode as well or just continuous? I'd say if it only happens in continuous modes then there is nothing wrong, the camera is just very fast. If it happens in single shot mode then there is likely a problem, it is double-contacting or something.

Both of mine have very sensitive portrait shutter buttons also, but hey, the double shutter could be advantageous too, keeps you from having to switch to high speed mode :) (just kidding)

As stated above, getting used to the rear * button to focus helps out a lot as then your not trying to focus and expose on the same button, which in this case is very sensitive. That was also the 1st thing i noticed when switching over to the 1D body, there is no distinctive 1/2 stop between focus and shutter release with either of the 2 button on either of my 2 camera bodies.

Going to echo the rest here, my portrait/grip shutter button is also more sensitive than the landscape/top one (either intentionally or just because it doesn't get used as often?) and have shot plenty of accidental pictures of my feet with it.

And, yes, it's definitely more efficient to use the alternate buttons to focus. I set my * to either a specific spot (usually upper-far-right or upper-far-left) or to multi-point, and then set my W/B button to the center point.

Yes, it's great with the custom function set for the W/B button as alternate focus point AND back button focusing as it focusing as soon as you press each one, using the AF point registered to each. Let's you quickly change sides when shooting sports as the action quickly changes from one direction to the other, great for birds in flight for the same reason, nice for flipping from portrait to landscape, eye to eye, whatever.

Its on single shot mode, and yea a friend told me about the * button for AF, guess ill get used to that, though it still does the double shoot thing.

And yea, i think its double contacting, i dont really know what to do about it except deal. All i read is exorbitant prices for the button replacement from canon so i dont think i want to go that route.

thanks all

Yeah, I don't think it would be worth it to pay the $200+ to send it off to Irvine. You can always just turn the 'grip' off when you're only shooting horizontal.

Both shot with my new(to me) 300/2.8 IS. Great lens from Adorama's used department.

Nah, no rain cover. This isn't the first time I've shot in that much rain, and I find that rain covers just trap moisture closer to the camera, which is worse than beading up on the surface. It also makes it harder to do anything.

1D Mark II and 300 f/2.8L IS are both weather sealed, no worries...

Gotcha, gotta love that Canon weather-sealing!
