I agree too that the rain sleeves end up keeping water around the camera more than anything. A 1D and sealed L lens is the only solution to shooting in the rain, really.

My boss had a rain sleeve on his 5d2, and he didn't get to the track until after the truly heavy rain. He may have bricked his 5d due to moisture gathering under the sleeve, whenever he turns it on it goes crazy and takes pictures continuously. I suppose I should pick up some nice UV filters for my 24-70 and 70-200 to complete the sealing on them, but I find the hood works well enough to keep water off the front element.

I find weather-sealing the photographer to be more important than the gear. Rain pants, a good rain coat, goretex shoes and a decent hat are vital in this weather.

Yeah, do get the clear lens caps for rain, at 70mm the 24-70 is pretty well hooded but at 24mm it isn't that far from the end.

Canon should make an L series rain poncho. ;)

Mine is blue. I guess I'll have to spraypaint it white, then add a red stripe.

....this is just a snapshot, but I like it ! And once again, I am just blown away with the old Mk2 and the 300 2.8 ( this shot at 3.2). Baby girl was getting ready to get back in the pool today....I looked down there and saw this....grabbed a quick snapshot.

Not positive, but I think the 70-200 2.8 IS does not require a UV filter to complete the weather sealing. Not sure about the 24-70.

Beautiful portrait above, quick snap or not!

The 24-70L definitely needs a front filter to complete sealing. 70-200L IS probably too, basically any lens that accepts a front filter needs it but I don't own a 70-200 so I'm not 100% sure. The 300mm f/2.8 does not need or take a front filter, it has a clear front lens element which is protective already and it takes rear drop-in filters.

Thanks ! ...and yeah....baby girl is pretty easy to shoot. The layout here makes it good as a coincidence really...because I have a deck ( where that shot was taken from ) off the kitchen, then four feet below is the pool deck. So I get lucky a lot of times and get the kids there where I have the pool as a nice blue BG, and I like the angle of shooting down a little bit.

Both do need a filter to complete the sealing. I've never bothered since the hood on the 70-200 usually keeps water off the front element fine, and I rarely use the 24-70 for sports. When I get some more income this summer I'll pick one up for each of them.

no the 70-200 2.8 IS doesn't need one since the front element doesn't move allowing it to seal. keep in mind only the IS versions of the 70-200 have weather sealing.
