Another couple from the last 2 days. More photos are on my blog and in the sports photo sharing section.

Have a question. I just picked up a 1DN about a week ago. How do I turn off the blinking highlights on playback?

It's in the menu. I have the 1DII, not the N (yet) but assuming that it is the same, the second page of the menus, the ones with a play button like [>] has all the options for playback. The 4th one from the top is "Highlight Alert" so I guess you want to turn it off. Personally I like to see it, and the next one too "Display AF points" but it is personal preference of course.

Few photos from my Friday night gig. I'll only show up 3, linked a few more. Very happy with the end result. I shot all of them at ISO 1600, available stage light plus 2 wireless flashes either side of the stage. LR3 NR but nothing else.

how hard is it to take the internal NiMH batteries inside the NP-E3 battery and replace them with new ones or with some eneloops?

Someone had a tutorial somewhere here on POTN and maybe even in this thread on how to do it but I can't seem to find it. The only thing I could find was this link at Flickr: http://www.flickr.com …edrikbillgren/3269894893/ (external link)

I think the total cost was something like $35 to do so (new Lenmars cost $39 these days).

Buy a cheapo battery from ebay. That's what I did, and I get something like 2000-3000 shots per charge on my MKII.

Sometimes the endcaps on the cheapos can be quite crummy and will not provide a complete seal meaning you won't have weather sealing. You could transfer the end cap from the older Canon battery to the new one though to fix that.

A couple of quick questions.

If you have every setting perfect at ISO 1600, except you need to go from 1/640 to 1/800 ss, then boost the ISO to 3200 and pull it down 2/3 of a stop in post to control the noise, would that not be better than shooting it at 1/640 at ISO 1600 noise wise?

How weather-resistant is a 1d coupled with a nice, long prime Canon lens? I saw the shot of the guy with his 1d and 300 in pouring down rain and it got me thinking.

I'm having some trouble setting up my personal functions. Could anyone tell me their process and what all I'm doing wrong? I try and select something in my PF menu, but it won't allow me to scroll.

you have more control if you push ISO 1600 a bit in post, rather than taking it at 3200 in camera. Similar results.

The 1d is weather sealed when combined with a weather sealed canon lens. Google "weather sealed canon lens" for a list.

when navigating the menus you need to use both a button and the wheel in combination. When you get to the custom functions menu, use the select button + the scroll wheel when the focus is on the c. fn number to change which custom function your on, and when you want to change a particular function hit the select button once, then use the select+wheel again in combination to change your setting.

I find that, when combined with a sealed lens my camera is better sealed than I am. I'll need to give up and go in because I'm too wet before the camera will.

Thanks for the help. I know it's weather sealed, but how far have some people taken their camera and lens?

And on the menu side, I can navigate the Cfn menu fairly well and can find all of those settings, but is there a step that I may be missing in order to navigate the personal functions menu? I tried to switch to AF assist beam the other day in personal functions and I was unable to select it.

You need to activate personal functions via computer before you can toggle them in-camera.

To be more precise, you have to activate personal functions from your computer using the EOS Utility via a firewire connection.

Me personally, I would shoot at ISO 1600 and boost the 1/3 of a stop in post since ISO3200 is a non-native ISO and cuts dynamic range.

I haven't used it in more then a very light sprinkle with a weather sealed 70-200 for more then a few min. It stopped sprinkling after those few min. but I'd be willing to use it in harsher conditions if it means getting the shot or not.

Do you have to connect via firewire to set the personal functions? I don't have a cable :(

Yes, it has to be firewire.
