SO....

anyone, how much does a new sensor cost, or does Canon even have replacement sensors for a 1D mkII anymore ?

I bought a pack of the wet/dry sensor swabs from Delkin (without the scope and vaccuum) to try to clean my sensor's before a wedding shoot on Wednesday. Well now instead of spot's I have streaks... :( And i can't tell if i scratched the sensor, or if the swab solution left a film on there...

Sorry No pics to post my internet is down at home since Saturday!!!

So any ideas, should I just have my local camera shop try to clean it, or send it into Canon (and if send it in to Canon, how do I go about doing that?)

Luckily i have a back-up 1Dmk2, as i didn't attemp to clean the second one after i F'd up the 1st. But i'm still pretty pissed at myself !

This, and dozens of other similar stories are why I only dry clean my sensors .. a $15 LensPen SensorKlear has worked 100% for me.

If I were you try the whole cleaning process from the start and see if the streaks diminish .. it's not at all likely you scratched anything, it's probably just excess solution residue.

how hard is it to take the internal NiMH batteries inside the NP-E3 battery and replace them with new ones or with some eneloops?

This was discussed, I believe, much earlier in this thread. In case you didn't know. Might find the help you need there.

Chill out Tim ! It's okay brotha....you don't need a new sensor ! Take a deep breath, go for a walk with the dog...come back and work your way thru the process carefully, methodically....you'll get it clean and life will be good.

I did try to re-do the whole process 3 times last night, and the streaks never left... I will try again tonight, but honestly I am now paranoid to make it worse than it already is. I do have a generic lenspen however i didn't know they were safe for use on sensor's.

Tim,
just don't get carried away and get so much fluid on there that you end up with it seeping around and getting between the AA filter and the sensor itself. Do some reading on various sources on how to get thru the process, and you will find some examples of guys that have been exactly in your shoes, and what they did to correct it. You have probably streaked some lubricant across it, and it's going to take a bit of work to dissolve it and get it off there. I would say the chances that you have ruined it are almost nil....you'll get it....stay after it ! And I'm sure I don't need to tell you this....but it bears repeating: make sure your battery is well charged.

Now that's some rain!!! I'll shoot my 1D in everything, rain, snow, whatever. My fingers get too cold before the camera battery goes flat usually. Only thing is, choose wisely before you go out into rain; fit the right lens, a fully charged battery etc. because you can't change anything on a wet camera. If the battery dies, turn it off and bring out your backup body. Don't switch lenses in the rain either!

Yes, you need Firewire to change the photographer's name and personal functions aside from a few very basic ones which can be set in camera.

I doubt you scratched the sensor but if you've tried 3-4 times already then you might need to send it in for professional cleaning. Canon will do it and can tell you if you really do need a new sensor. Good luck! I hope it isn't that bad.

Do you have to connect via firewire to set the personal functions? I don't have a cable :(

I bought a cable @ best Buy... it's a 4 pin to 9 pin...I believe...

The wet sensor cleaning process is intimidating. The best advice I read before doing it myself was "if you do not get all the dirt off, go take a break, come back to it another time." Doing it over and over can get the best of you mentally. There were two specks of dirt that wouldn't budge off mine, and I just said to heck with it. They are barely noticeable at f/8, and I can't see them at f/5.6. Even when I do see them, fixing them in Photoshop is easy. I took some shots at f/20 the other day, and I saw dirt in new places, so it's time to clean it again.

Nice Ladyslippers, Cathy! I didn't buy mine to be a flower camera but it sure does a good job on them. Nice to be able to choose AF points so close to the corners of the frame for composition though I'll often manually focus with the EF-S screen too.

I've got to admit that the camera went into the hydrophobia bout twenty mins after that shot when we got lightning!! I decided not to ruin another mark II.

Is there a reason personal functions won't work without enabling them via firewire?

To enable them, simply plug in the camera, run the latest software package for the 1d2 and find out where the personal functions is? Also, can I set the camera to automatically throw my name in the exif?
