Nice senior pics!

Are 'senior pics' a recent thing or a thing done in the states I wonder? I had a formal grad picture taken of course but not casuals like senior pics seem to be.

Yup! Love my 1D Mk II :D

That tripod is vintage  was from the early 70's from what I know. I got it off Ebay for $10 + $10 shipping based on a recommendation from a friend. Holds up my 1D2 + 70-200 2.8L IS at it's max height (I think around 52in.-58in. or so, have to measure it) pretty sturdily and came with a 3 way pan head that pans really smoothly. Pretty much all metal construction with metal tabs and knobs. Weighs in at 4.5lbs. Best bargain I've seen for a sturdy tripod.

Only thing missing from it for me is a quick release. I've been trying to look if there's an easy way to add one (I'm not highly familiar with tripods or their accessories either :p )

I also have some older brand (i think like american star?) tripod no quick release but it is also about 5 pounds so it could easily hold my equipment.

I use these. They work fine.

I applied the wrong sharpening preset here - sorry, but I think you'll get the idea - classic F1 at Silverstone! Yum! Also since I was behind the fences today, no 14mm shots. No 1/30th pans. No 16-35 shots. No pit lane shots. BOOOO!!! They are my favorite bits/shots!!
1 - I liked the formation of the angles, perhaps the marmite shot of the day.

2 - Going around the outside at abbey! Mad!

3 - Firing through the fence. Nothing special other than I liked the painwork so I wanted to show it in the set. :p

4 - More going through a fence, I managed to sneak a metre or so away from the fence so quickly took advantage of the distance and tried a few at 1/80th - a little soft this one...

70-200mm was all I really needed, unless I'm being paid I can't be bothered to lug around the big glass! (300 f/2.8 and 500m f/4)

I'd advise you to get a Sigma 300mm f/2.8 over a 100-400mm for field sports!!! The fast aperture and AF tracking is much more important, if I was you I'd wamt to have the Siggy on the 7D, 1D with the 70-200. It would be a great set-up. You can really crop heavy a 300 2.8 - especially with a hi res body like the 7D. I think that would be the best quality/price comprimise.

As for getting close to the cars stand right next to the fencing at the closest locations!!! #

At many of our circuits in the UK 200mm is enough for most locations. Other than our international tracks. (and when I go trackside I can even get to 35mm fills the frame!)

Full-frame at 17mm!!! Personally I like wide angles.

Full frame 50mm, sometimes making the car less dominant works. (f/32, excuse dust, I haven't spent much time cleaning it it since it's not for sale!).

This time a full frame at 200mm.

But at the same track as I was using the 17mm, I can also use the 500mm and use that too. [500mm at a/13th :p:p:p:p]

Some interesting shots. Ya the 300 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 would a perfect set up except i dont have 3k to drop on that one lens. How about the sigma 100-300f4?

The 100-300 f/4 is nice, but not much better than a 1.4x TC for your 70-200mm f/2.8.

BTW the Sigma 300mm f/2.8 is cheaper than the 100-400mm you were also considering (especially if your going used).

I'd consider the following:

400mm f/5.6 - not as fast, but the AF is very good and in combo with the 70-200 would work well.

1.4x TC - for your 70-200 - might get you enough reach?

100-300mm f/4 - Good solid zoom - but probably not as nice as your 70-200mm

OR save up a little longer and buy a used Sigma or Tokina 300mm f/2.8 (about £1000)

hope this helps,
Josh

guys : what wide angle lenses besides the 16-35 and 17-40 will work on the 1.3x crop? I may pick up a "in between" lens for a job until i have enough for the 16-35 then re-sell it...i sold my 17-40 and may need to borrow one...OR..just pick up one to hold me off. It's for interior stuff so would be stopping down to f8 or 9 anyway.

thoughts?

the sigma 12-24 (im not sure if too many stores still sell it for canon but they definitely have it for nikon). Is it just me but doesn't anyone think its stupid that the 1d mark II doesnt have a multi controller like the 40/50d and 7d cameras.
