1D III has its own problems, focus, etc. and while they did upgrade the shutter lifetime it is just a matter of time. Look at the problems the 40Ds have had and 50D owners say the 40D is bad but now the 50Ds are getting the same problems, so are XSi's. Shutters go, they are mechanical. You try raising and lowering your venetian blinds 50000 times...

It is the reason why I have 3 bodies though. I know that one day one of them will go... and I can afford to buy two Mark II bodies for the price of one Mark III so I consider that a better bet than going around with just one body. Now that is asking for trouble!

Thats the situation I am stuck in :s I sold my 40D for $600 on craigslist to fund my cheap 85L purchase. I don't like having paid gigs without a backup body.

I love having the 2.8 aperture of the 70-200. Couldn't imagine what the 24L would look like!

Love these shots. I've looked through the thread for your settings, but can find them - what did you do/use?

To my (inexperienced) eye, it looks like a really fast pan, not trying to keep the car centred, but from in front of the car to behind it, and a slow enough shutter to slightly blur the car too.

Anywhere close?

Steve

Pan with the car - shutter speed about 1/10th - 1/25th at about 140mph. On a slower straight you'll need slower, faster a little quicker.

Manual focus for those pair since I'm shooting f/16 at a wide angle, but I still keep my AF point hovering over the action becuase I find it help remind me what I'm aiming for.

Nice shot! Love the heavy red streaks. Is this in auto or manual focus and what ISO did you use....400 maybe?

Auto focus for all but the two top ones.

ISO50. 1/10th-1/25th for the top ones. The others are various speeds.

Thanks - really nice effect. I can imagine those shots on the wall, printed nice & big.

Great portraits! The first one does look wrong for school but the last two are really good, great lighting.

Was just doing some corporate executive portraiture myself this morning with my II N, who says it can't be used in studio  Lights, remote, nice big 2.5" LCD you can view from multiple angles so the art director can see too. Live view is pretty much useless with lights anyways since I don't have modeling lamps.

Edit: was funny though, I left my 50mm lenses at home and yet I ended up shooting my 24-70L at 51mm, quite funny... using lights I was shooting at f/8 anyways so aperture didn't matter and it looks cooler with the brick on it

I always hate when this happens, mostly because if I'm shooting @ 50mm f/8, I really don't have a need for (insert $$$$$ lens here) when my nifty is ridiculously sharp at that aperture anyway.

I was thinking about tossing a nifty fifty in a pocket but I didn't. I brought my 40D with 135L as my second camera in my small bag, otherwise I would have brought my 1DII with the 50.. as it turns out I should have but I thought I might need more reach. They were supposed to be headshots but when I got there they changed their mind to half body instead so I didn't need the 135L after all...

So I used the Lenmar for the first time this last week. I started the shoot using it and near the end of the first day I had a dead battery. I had about 150 shots and it was dead. I thought this rotten, stinking 3rd party piece of crap.:(

The next day I, of course, went back to the Canon battery and had exactly the same experience!

Could I possibly have gotten a weak lenmar at exactly the same time my Canon battery is dying? The only other thing I can think of is that I am viewing the shots on the LCD that much. Which I do, but that much?

The other issue is that I am having problems with my shutter button. I missed some shots, not a lot, because the shutter would delay firing. It would then also sometimes fire twice when I would go to shoot? I shoot in incredibly dusty conditions so there is no question the shutter release button could be dusty. I looked at it this morning and it is coated with dust. Any way to go at cleaning the shutter release button other than sending it in to Canon?

.;)

Some of you may remember the conversation we had about this a couple weeks ago. Many of you were good enough to respond. I got my camera back from Canon yesterday. Someone on here had suggested that maybe the battery drain was also related to shutter sticking. Canon told me that they replace the whole assembly on top of the body that holds the shutter button. Very likely they were related.

Canon's turn around time was amazing! I shipped it on September 8th. It was back to me on 14th. Total was around $200.

I am off to test it on a three day shoot at SDSU tomorrow. Glad it's back!!!
