Second, assuming I don't need the camera for sports, is there a reason to go with mark ii n over mark ii?

For me, the larger screen, and the ability to record raw to the CF card and JPEG to the SD card was what prompted me to get the II N...

Also, I took my II N in to my local camera store and had them clean the sensor while I watched... Next time I can clean it myself...

Yeah I'd say the bigger screen and better dual memory card handing makes the N a much better camera.

Just choose one at a good price and go for it. In spite of what many may tell say, you really have no reliable way of knowing what the true shutter count is, unless you ( or someone you trust ) bought it new and kept track of it. It's fun to do things like look at the file with the apps that purport to tell you the count....but I wouldn't consider it to be more then entertainment value.
I recently got one of my 1DMk2 serviced, and I specifically asked them to give me the shutter count. It was noted on the work order when I got it back....and they still did not give me the number. So much for that !
Don't worry about it really. If you buy it at a reasonable cost, then you can always justify spending some money on repairs if it comes up. Or, if you buy from someone like KEH or Adorama, you can buy a mack warranty if you're into that kind of idea.
There is also a very good possibility that it will function just fine and not need service during the time you own it.

I gotcha man, thanks

Im trying to get a "better" camera for shooting sports, but also for my dad's wedding in May, so Im concerned if I should get the MK2 or not
I know its AF system is top notch, but how is it portrait wise as the 5DMK2 is the king.

Ha ! ..well, thanks Ron. And yes, for sure it seems I spend a majority of my shooting time pointing the camera at the horses.....I do try to make some time in the studio with the girls.

Dan,
Nice shots. Both of them, but I especially like the second. Moody look to the sky, and the inclusion of the centerline of the road works better with the fact you have her feet in the photo. Nice use of the centerline element coming to the point of interest. My eye went from the sky down the line to her foot, then up to her face. Pretty girl. ( looks high maintenance.... LOL ! ).

haha thanks george : she was a bit much at times, but i was patient, i guess another chapter of my life closed..sigh..

thanks for the comments on the photos, glad you took the time to comment!

I can't justify the cost of the mkiii...nearly a thousand more and for what? I'd rather wait it out until my mkiin shutter dies again and then invest in a newer body.

ps. I actually saw someone selling a mkiii for 1700 i think. Not too bad of a price lol but still...can't justify it.

I'd agree there, I'd rather buy a 1Ds MkII for the same price as a 1D MkIII. The MkIV, on the other hand...

Ryon,
....well....you're welcome, but make sure you understand that much of what will 'make' your photos is also lighting, composition, and post process. For instance, you say you have a 20D.....I shot with a pair of 20D's for several years.
Although this is not a portrait, would you agree this has nice detail and color ? Shot with a 20D.

Ryon,
....and don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to talk you out of or into buying selling or trading anything. Your statement about the 5D2 being so good in the studio.....that is certainly true, but, and this is a big "but"......virtually every portrait shot you see posted on this forum could be taken with any of the DSLR's in the Canon lineup, from the rebel on up thru the 1DS3. Virtually every shot that you see that you think is good-to-outstanding has has some thought put into it from a shoot standpoint, and then has had some-to-a-lot of work put into it in post.
I'm not saying you would make the following mistake.....but I am just pointing out that some folks have bought better, more expensive gear, and then were disappointed that their photos looked essentially the same as what they had been getting with the previous gear.
Think before you spend. Nothing beats education and experience, and it's one of the strongest points of this particular forum: there are many folks here with a lot of talent that are willing to share their knowledge. Ask questions, post photos up and ask for honest critique. Sometimes the responses can be brutal, but you will learn if you take it with an open mind.

I totally understand what youre saying George and appreciate it
Im feeling my 20D just isnt "cutting" it as far as noise handling and Mark speed AF for the low light conditions and fast paced action I shoot.
I love my 20D to death, but I feel its time to upgrade maybe and learn a more experienced platform.

I really appreciate man
Thanks

Hi everyone,

my 1D MKII showed a blinking battery symbol today. That's fine I wanted to run it down then charge it. This is a original Canon brand NP-E3.

The last shot I took it sounded like either the shutter/mirror didn't return. I turned the camera off and re-seated the battery. When I turned the camera back on I could hear either the shutter/mirror returning to position.

Can weird things like this happen on a low battery? Am I doing damage by running the battery that low?

Thanks,
Ben
