How well does it perform next to the 5-d mark 2?

Image quality wise? No comparison. 5D is simply amazing.

Ease of use? 1D edges ahead

Speed and focus? 1D beasts the 5D

Best compromise? Get a 1Ds MKII or MKIII

1D easier to use than 5D?? I don't agree with that.

I guess that's a personal preference. Having come from a very similar 40D I guess the 1D MKII can be pretty intimidating.

I have both. I will always choose the 5D2 for landscapes, portraits, low light situations etc. The 1DMk2N gets used for sports and wildlife as the AF and frame rate are so much better.

I will shoot a brazilian jiu jitsu event saturday...Do you think I should activate focus assist points or it's better only center point? Better evaluative mode or center weight? (the athlets wear kimonos all white or blue). Thanks

I'd show up early and get a few practice shots to see what works and use that for the remainder of the session..

You also need to determine if you want motion blur in the pictures to give a better sense of action (in which case you need to experiment to determine the right shutter speed) or if you want to freeze the motion.

If the lightning is even, I would try to determine shutter speed and f-stop and go manual, because you could get under/over-exposures from the white/blue kimonos.

Have fun and show the results here!

/Kenneth

I agree with Ken that some practice shots will be in order, and further, when I shoot indoors for event like that, I typically use an incident light meter to determine exposure, and shoot a black/gray/white target for WB reference. I use a photovision target, but there are others.
If you lack a incident meter, you could use the camera's spot meter ( if it has one ) on a gray card or the tri-color card to get an exposure value.

Awesome hood!

Has there ever been an insert to use AA or AAA batteries in the 1D Mk II like you have for battery grips?

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.
