I have been reading all of this thread since buying my 1d mk II (should be here today) anwyas I have seen some talk about high ISO banding issues but none of the photos that were posted are showing up any more. Can someone explain what this banding is and what it looks like? I know that I will be shooting at 1600 alot and just want to know what I should be looking for once I get mine.

As long as your exposure is correct, shoot with confidence at iso 1600. Furthermore, iso 3200 can be doable as well, but will require some more NR.

Yeah I took a fair amount of shots last night using ISO 1600 and the shots came out fine. Had a little bit of noise but that's ok because the noise isn't as bad as say the 50D's when trying to bring up exposure in pp.

The only time I experienced banding was shooting at 3200 on my 1D classic

Thanks! I haven't seen a storm with good lightning like that in a while. We're supposed to get more tonight, so I'll be out there again! Some places around me got baseball size hail, which is extremely rare for where I live.

Would you mind sharing how you triggered the shutter for those lightning shots? Are you just doing a burst of shots and hoping to catch it or do you have some optical trigger?

I need to stay out of the buy/sell forum. It's burning a hole in the wallet...

Now I can finally join you guys. It has taken some time but now I have finally changed my system to Canon. I picked up a 1D Mk II a couple of days ago and it has been to Canon ( I have a service center in my town) for a check up. I got it for $380 incl two batteries and charger. I didn´t expect much for the price but I was really suprised, "only" 54,850 exp.

The way prices on MKIINs have fallen, they are a steal now.

well I got mine in the mail today although I dont offically get it until friday because my fiance wants to wrap it up and give it to me for my birthday in front of our friends and family. I told her if she wanted to give me a camera as a gift I would have to see it before hand to make sure she got a good one and from the short time I got to mess with it today I think she did pretty darn good. I will have to read the manual for this camera though :)

So I guess you made a decision based on your poll results, huh? Great decision. What else are you getting from your fiance for your birthday?:o;)

Shooting a horse show in Broken Bow starting tomorrow but as I said in your poll (thread) I'll let you know when I have my next shoot at the Event Center.

When it was a bit lighter out, I just kept shooting hoping to get a bolt. When it got dark, I'd do a 20-30 second exposure and hope for the best. It's mostly luck, good timing, and looking in the right direction.

Not a lot of point to triggers since you miss the first strike with the initial stepped leader and branches. Something has to set the trigger off, after all, and the shutter isn't instantaneous, it has a 60ms delay. So what you'll end up with in most situations is either nothing or a single return channel, depending on shutter speed and the number and frequency of return strokes. Now there are some situations in which you get a great big cascade of lightning bolts, usually anvil crawlers, where a trigger could still pick up quite a lot of action. Thing is, you could trigger the camera reflexively in such a situation with just as much success.

At twilight/night the strategy is simple: Long shutter speeds in sequence. ISO and aperture controls the exposure of the lightning as if it were a flash unit. The lightning's brightness is usually dependent on distance and what's in the air (A rain shaft, for instance, will obscure lightning completely).
