I have about $3500 to spend and am really stressing my choices.

1. 5d/24-105 kit, 580exII, Pro9000 printer(for rebate)
All the above brand new from Adorama=$3507

2. 1DMKIII used but in perfect shape

I dont really have any lenses at this time except the 50 1.8. I will however be getting some more cash in a few months and could possibly purchase a lens then.

My thing is this. Do you go all out to get a pro body or would I be better served to get the whole kit? I really love the markIII and may not have the cash again to get one.

What do you shoot? A mk III and a 50 1.8 won't be any good until you get that cash.

Choice #1 seems very good.

general rule is to invest in lenses rather than camera. unless u really need full frame, i'd look for 30d for 1/3rd price and get 1 more L lens :)

#2. The 5D is a sick piece of equipment. With the 24-105 L, it's all the more amazing. That lens covers a very useful range and with IS to boot. It's a no-brainer.

Well I just got rid of my 30D and 17-40 to fund this upgrade.

My thinking is the 5D is a great camera but is missing lots of the features that the new cameras have. Also I really like the body of the 1D.

I know this has been beaten to death but what if the 5D replacement comes this year? If I have the markIII the value will remain solid for a while (until the IIIn comes out)

I mean this in the kindest way possible: So what? The 5D is still a great camera whether it's lacking the newer technology or not. Its IQ will always occupy a mythical role in Canon lore.

A shot of Boston taken by Flash. It has the 3D quality characteristic of the 5D as well as that "glow":

True dat. People seem to perceive some kind of weird aura around the 5D. At times it seems more like myth than camera.

I was going to tell you to get the 5D but it looks like you already went ahead and did it.

I too am in the what-if-as-soon-as-i-buy-it-the-replacement-comes-out boat with the 5D but I just have to keep telling myself that the original 5D (if/when a "new" one does come haha) will always take great pictures so I shouldnt have any qualms about getting it.
