Just wanted to share the news with other photo nerds.

I was called into my bosses office the other day for a sit down, closed door meeting... a rare thing.

We went through a list of action items he needed help on and discussed the corporate course. Bla, blah, blah.

The last action item was, (paraphrased) was such, from my boss, "We need a company camera, now you have been using yours for all of the photo work here for the last two years, is that one good enough for us?" (I do the corporate, product and standard work instruction, and training photography and video).

"Yes", I said, "it has done us well to now".

He looked at me and said, "Great, we would like to buy yours, or rather take yours, and we will buy you a new camera, do you know what you want?"
I looked at the ceiling in a moment of pause, smiled in confusion and strain, hope... "Well", I said, "are you asking me what camera I had planed to get for my birthday?"

"Ya, sure, we'll buy you birthday present for you, do you know how much it costs?", he stated.

Picture my face at this moment; must have been comical.

For a moment I was going to aim high and quote the price for a 5D kit, but my original plan was a 40D, so I thought I would be fair.
"Well", I said, I think, I think it is about $1600ish. While I knew the exact price of all the stuff, I said, "I think" because I was still testing to see how real this was!
With out hesitation, he said, "Okay, just let me know what, and where to get it, and I'll get it for you somehow".
"Wow", I said.
Then he says, "Oh", and you just take care of the camera you have now, just when we need it, we get to use it".
"Meeting adjourned"

The following day I sent him a $2200.00 package list for a 40D with all the fixings from B&H photo, who happens to have a $200 rebate available right now.

First time I ever got a bonus in the workforce, and this carrot is perfect for me!

April is my birthday, and the original plan time to get a DSLR, but with all members of the family needing glasses and dental work, and a car that needs as much attention, it looked like a dream that was fading into next year.

So excited.

Nice bonus!!!!!

It's rare that an employer isn't trying to rip you off.

Well done for not going for the 5d kit. That was honest of you. And congrats on the forthcoming gear.

The other cool thing is, the camera I have now was a gift from someone who believed in me, as I understand now. This fired up a heart for photography and the art in the medium, that made me decide to pursue it in hobby, meditation and business, but after a couple of years, I am feeling quite limited.
So far, then, everything has been of no cost to me thanks to good people.

definitely a feel-good moment there! and its commendable that yr boss acknowledges that the company has been using YOUR camera for the past 2 years and is now buying it over - and paying for your new one! usually, employers would simply ask you to recommend a new model for the company and say "thanks for the use of your personal cam all this while".
