I know this is the raw, print PP section so I thought I would do a small install and review on the CIS kit i got. I've been in the market for one of these lately and finally plunged in and picked one up for my R1800. I went with the inkrepublic CIS kit and mediastreet pigment inks. (Thanks JohnJ80)Total cost: $ 331.42 (181.47 mediastreet inks 3day shipping: 149.95 inkrepublic kit).

Items in the ink republic kit:
* 1 Clear square case with 8 ink containers and 1 waste ink container.
* 1 Waste ink tube
* 1 set of rest chips
* 1 pair of latex gloves
* 1 small double ended screw drive (flat head/ Philips)
* 1 set of tube braces
* 1 set of 8 ink cartridges with tube and cutoff clamps
* 1 new ink try cover
* 1 instructions burned onto a CD
* 2 round foam adhesive pads
* 1 suck bottle
* 2 Cartridge removal rings

First impression:

Date ordered 02/16/08; Saturday (both items)

Date received 02/22/08; Friday(both items)

Customer care (mediastreet)
*pros: Fast responses to any e-mails I sent. Had them make a custom ICC profile for there inks for the Epson photo glossy paper, received it a few days after I requested it. Once again fast.
*cons: They supplied the wrong tracking number in cash invoice in e-mail (Happens from time to time)

Customer service (inkrepublic)
*pros: Before I bought the kit I asked a few questions super fast responses with accurate answers.
*cons: Once I ordered the kit I emailed them asking if they shipped it out, once on 02/20/08 and today 02/22/08. No responses. They say they will email you when the item ships, never happened. (but they did apologize for the delayed response the day i received the package.)

Packaging (mediastreet): Inks sealed in clear plastic bags 4 per bag then taped shut & placed in packing popcorn in a box well sized for two bags of ink. A++

Packaging (inkrepublic):
Everything was sealed in its own bag. I'm talking sealed like computer components are from the manufacturer. Packed tight in a box a tad small for everything but none the less well packed. A+

Installation instruction:
I quickly read through the word document file they provide on the CD on how to install there CIS kit. Very easy to understand and on top of that they have pictures literally step by step on what you need to do and how to do it. For the sake of this thread I am not going to post step by step but more section by section as I go along.

Step one: Swapping out the ink tray covers.

“BE VERY CAREFULL NOT TO BREAK THE TAB WHEN DOING THIS!” Damn wish I took some of my own advice. Well it is not going to hinder the performance but still pissed me off. Errrrrrrrrrrrrrr! O well on we go.

Power on the printer then hit the ink button try moves over unplug printer now ink tray moves freely on the track. Pop out the old cover replace with the new cover. Since I broke the left tab I will be modifying the Epson cover to work. It has the center section that locks in with the ink tray and stay in place better then if I had to use the provided cover. If the bracket did not brake then I would use the inkrepublic cover.

Broken tab:
IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2034/2284763743_b3222f69de_o.jpg

Old & New Compared:
IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2033/2284756139_c3b7d4d1ee_o.jpg

Marked area to modify Epson tray:

Epson tray cover modified:

Now the chipset are extremely easy to install. Make sure you install the right ones on the proper side then followed by the support brace.

Chipsets and braces in place:

Once you are finished with the tray, the real fun begins. I quickly labeled the ink bottles by color and then double checked the tubes to the dampers and labeled them as well. Filled the bottles and started the purging of the dampers. The more anal you are the longer it will take.

Extra ink left:

Bottle filled and labeled:

Ink bottles in holding case (pre purging):

Pros: They let you have the option to purge your own kit other then them purging it for you. Allows for the user to minimize bubbles to nearly nil.

Cons: They only supple you with one suck bottle for all 8 colors. They say rinse with water between purges. Man that takes for ever.

Purging

Cleaning (PITA):

Repeat till complete. May take a while so leave your’ self a good time period to install the kit.

Dampers installed after purging:

Next it was time to install the center bridge brace. Measured the required distance in the instructions and peeled the tape then placed it in its place.

Now that the ink dampers are all purged and in place we move on to the ink waste bottle. Although you do now have a CIS this is something I recommend everyone do.

Pros: Ink waste bottle never will be filled to a certain point to where the printer will not operate due to the fact that you can empty it when it fills up.

Cons: There are none.

First remove the two Phillips screws located on the back side of the printer directly behind where the ink tray sits when not printing. Using a flat head screw driver pop the tabs out of place on the bottom of the side panel.

Popping the tabs on the side panel:

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2232/2287325748_82c859dd38_o.jpg

Side panel removed:
IMAGE: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3222/2287327144_54fd2f3944_o.jpg

Epson inkwaste:
IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2116/2286539079_c7ae10b4ab_o.jpg

Now simply move the clamps over to the side then slide the lines off. Careful ink will splatter all over you. I ran the lines through the far back tap location and then slipped them into the lines coming from the inktray. Slide the clamps back over the inkrepublic tubes and the inside connections are finished.

Waste ink completed:
IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2356/2286538565_bc0d5e177e_o.jpg

I had to clip the back tab off so that the waste ink tubes do not get pinched and block flow of waste ink coming out of printer.

Tab shaved off:
IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2295/2287326504_401b8d2608_o.jpg

Waste ink bottle:
IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2368/2287326000_62f3555ff4_o.jpg

Pretty much that finishes up the install of the CIS kit. Placed the side cover back on put the two screws back in and that was all it took.

Over head shot of complete install:

Overall installing the CIS kit was not hard at all just need to be very careful when doing it because you can easily mix up tubes and switch colors or even brake things like me! The kit design is very nice although visual aspect of the kit compared to mediastreet is not so pretty it is how it works that counts. They need to improve a few things in the instructions and add a few more suck bottles to the kit. But other then that I would have to say inkrepublic has it done to a science. Once you power things back on, the first few prints will not be perfect at all. You need to run the ink through the printer then it clears up. I thought I had a clog but it was the kit filling the printer and running ink through the nozzles. Now I get prints that have no horizontal lines but I now need to work on getting the color to match the Epson ink.

Printing results:

I did a 4x6 borderless print of an image on the Epson inks through lightroom, and then did one of the exact same image same settings profile and what not through lightroom but his time on the Inkrepublic kit with mediastreet pigment inks. I found that the Epson inks looks much more glossy then the media street inks but at the same time the media street inks match the colors on the monitor better. I scanned the two images for comparison. I don’t have a kick ass scanner so the quality might not be the best.

Print results: (epson on the left mediastreet on the right)

IMAGE: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3143/2286649989_38bdb2194b_o.jpg

Now the scanner did distort the color the mediastreet is not that far off.

This is something that does not just come ready to go obviously. Now I need to work on getting the colors pinned down then this will be very impressive and saves a lot of money in the long run.

The End!

Looks like you need a different profile for the mediastreet inks. As a test, how about adjusting in the color section of the print driver and see if you can get the same results.

They did send me a profile for the epson premium glossy paper. I followed there installation for lightroom and CS3. So can i adjust the color sttings in the profile they sent me? If so how? I am going to contact them to figure this out.

Also the mediastreet inks don't look that glossy as the epson inks do. Looks more like a matt finish with a touch of gloss.

Well I do have to say that the customer service on both products is outstanding. Inkrepublic offered to send me a free I-Remove kit if i would be so kind enough to write them a review and send them pictures of the installed product so they can host it on there website. I agreed. I wrote them a review and am sending them the pics today, well guess what i already got my I-remove kit already and i haven't sent them the pics yet. But i did write the review in the replied email. Damn they are great.

Now with mediastreet, They are going to make me a custom ICC profile. They sent me two targets to print out with instruction on what settings need to be set in cs2/cs3. I followed the instruction and am mailing them off tomorrow. Hopefully this cures the print quality and makes my prints look much better then they print now.

None the less A++ for both companies on the customer service.

Yes you can. I would probably leave out the epson print compared to the media street ink print. I can copy the text and send it to you if you like?

you said the first few prints will not be perfect. I had the same problem. I got horizontal lines on my prints and I hava already printed more than 5 prints already and it's still the same. I want to ask how many prints did you print to get rid of the horizontal lines? thanks!

Cleared up after about 6 or so prints i did a nozzle check and cleaning a few times then it was fine. I have since switched back to good old epson inks. I was printing a bunch of pictures one saturday then on sunday when i went to print all the ink was pulled back out of the dampers and colors were not being printed as the should of been. I toyed around all day sunday then said screw it. Headed out and picked up a new set of epson inks and have not looked back since. They refunded me the money and i still have the kit sitting in the corner of the room. I worked great but then over night failed. Maybe a bad kit who knows, they have people using their kits for over 3yrs not problems.
