I found an old Vivitar 2800D that I used on the film days wth my Canon AE-1. I know it's unsafe to use as hotshoe flash with my 30D but Can I use it as an off shoe flash (background light) with an Ebay optical slave attached.
Thanks
Neil B.

As long as the optical slave can handle the sync voltage, it'll be OK but the 30D can handle up to 250V. I don't know if there are too many eBay optical triggers that can handle sync voltages much higher than that.
