I am looking at the Di100FR & the Di400CR. I want to be able to use it on a tripod & also be able to hand hold. I will be using it with or without a grip on a 40D or 30D. I will mainly be using the 17-55, 24-70 & 70-200 2.8 IS. I realize that neither one might not accomodate the 70-200. It looks like (in the pics) that it might be a little awkward to handhold the CR version & still be able to access the zoom & focus rings.

I have searched & read as many threads as I could find.

So if you have experience with either of these can you please advise me on the best choice? Or will I most likely need both? How do you use the 70-200 with an off camera flash?

Thank you, Kath

Hi, Kath....

You will enjoy Robert Newton's brackets.....

Here are some recent posts I did not the FR/CRs..

Both can be used with tripods. Simplest (conceptually) is to just screw onto the tripod head. I have adapted both of mine to the RC2 QR...with a QR to attach to the camera (vs the Newton QR) and a 3157N anti-twist plate below it to attach to the tripod. The same can be done with A-S QRs, if that's what you use.

With the CR, there is no problem with working the lens controls....everything is positioned well and it is just something you get accustom to.

Either will work with a 70-200 2.8, particularly handholding or if mounting the camera to the tripod ballhead. However, when I use my 70-200 on a tripod or monopod, I mount it on the ring mount and change orientation by rotating the lens. With the CR, you need to attach it to the lens then the assembly to the 'pod. With the FR, it gets attached to the camera and the flash "flipped" when the lens rotated.

Last point....I am not sure the Di400CR will work with both a grip (which is it's design) and without a grip....without some add'l hardware for attachement. I suggest you give Robert Newton a call (see his web site). He is a great guy, with lots of experience and a willingness to help.

BTW....I am not quite sure I understand or have answered your question, "How do you use the 70-200 with an off camera flash?"

I have the RC2 , so I then would only need to buy the 3157 plate and I would be set?

I have read so many threads that I don't remember which one it was but the poster said that the 70-200 would not work because they are mounted by the tripod ring & that there was not enough room to rotate the camera, as in the ring would be too close to the bracket I believe.

Since you use the bracket with the 70-200 would it then be better to get the CR to so that it is more sturdy being attatched to the ring? Is that the one you use for this lens?

Thanks, Kath

The FR, if mounted via the tripod ring, will not have enough space to fit,,,,but it doesn't have to. It can be mounted on the camera base and work fine.

The CR will mount on the ring with the lens. Sits forward nicely. I like it with my 100-400 and a better beamer.

It is not about sturdyness,,,,both are sturdy, You have read the post I listed. Based on that you have to decide which will work best for you. If you are not sure, I am sure you can work out something with Robert....and a credit card....to try both....and decide which or both you want.

When you nail your decision, I will be glad to fill you in on some more pointers. Right now it is beddiby time 'round here....night,,,,
