After seeing all the nice, sharp photos from previous stages, I thought I would try my luck. These were taken at today's stage, which ended at the Rose Bowl, in Pasadena. (I was on the circuit).
Unfortunately, I was not blessed with things like decent light, dryness, etc. In other words, it was "not ideal" as far as photography conditions go. You know what? I had a blast anyway!
Here are a few that caught my eye:
First, to set the "weather stage"
The Mavic "good samaritan-mobile" which helps riders of all teams if they are in need of a speedy tire change. (And that's not noise, those are raindrops!)
As the breakaway hit the Rose Bowl circuit, Tom Zirbel immediately attacked.
(see attached image #1, below)
Although I was going for "motion blur", I think I may have moved into the "abstract art" regime with this shot. Obviously, it is FAR from sharp. I suppose that is what happens with a 1/80 sec shutter, 10 feet of separation from a subject moving 30 mph, and no IS!
Closely following Zirbel was the rest of the breakaway group.
(see attached image #2, below)
Here, Jason McCartney (CSC), Michael Creed (Rock Racing, foreground left), and George Hincapie (HighRoad, behind Creed) carefully observe the posted sign, which cautions "NO STOPPING ANY TIME". (The sign is sharp enough to read in full res, but turned illegible in the downsized shot, I'm afraid.)
A few seconds later, the peloton zipped by, charging hard!
(sorry for the broken link, I am working on fixing it... )
And finally, a terrible picture of a terrific rider: George Hincapie, stage winner, as he fixes his earpiece.
"Can you hear me now?"

Also, way to go for braving the nasty weather!
