Thanks for the responses. Since I have a Macro lens, an extension tube is NOT what I want. What I'd like is something to increase the distance of the 250mm at times. What are those called, and can they be used with this lens?

You can use either of Canon's newer series II EF12mm, or EF25mm extension tubes on EF-S lenses.

What you're looking for is a 1.4x or 2.0x tele-extender, and sadly none on the market as of today will work with EF-S lenses.

Thanks. I think I got the tele-extender mixed up with the extension tube.

It's called a 100-400L! :)

Even if there were an EF-S compatible teleconverter, the 55-250 is f5.6. With the resultant loss of light, you could not AF when using it on this lens

What kind of extension tubes can we use with this lens? I was under the impression (probably wrong) that extension tubes/lenses can't be used with EF-S lenses. See my sig for my camera.

Hi, I got my extension tube from Dealextreme for $10. It's not AF but it works the same.

I own an EF 400mm f/5.6L prime lens as well. It's autofocus is lightning fast and locks on the subject within fractions of seconds. Whereas the 55-250mm has a slow focus system. But it has IS and can capture some shots that are not so easy even for my big gun 400mm.

With its limited capabilities; it can also turn out some great performances as demonstrated by the flying bald eagle shot above. Great capture ckort.

Why would a Paranoid android put his full name in the EXIF data? You would think they would hide it, given their self-professed paranoia

Just picked up the 55-250 yesterday... I'd love to use it for my skiing photography, but I'm not sold on the AF speed just yet.

Here are some shots from the backyard this afternoon with the dogs playing around.

Talley chewing up the grass:

Notice her collection- three bones and a tennis ball. She's a hoarder:

Finally, they're tired. You know, for the time being (focus point on our black lab's face, which is why the yellow lab is slightly OOF):
