This is a nice lens for sports. I didn't use IS. (Yeah, both teams were blue)

It was sharpened and slight bump in contrast using the GIMP 30D / Tamron 17-50 F2.8 /85 1.8/ Canon 55-250 /430ex

I've only had this lens a few days (actually only had my camera a few days as well) but I've really enjoyed using it. 30D / Tamron 17-50 F2.8 /85 1.8/ Canon 55-250 /430ex

Jaci This is correct. In lower light settings the IS will help you to settle camera shake, but the only thing that will help with moving subjects is a fast shutter speed. In low light situations you would want faster lenses -- two lenses that are considered good performers for indoor sports are the 70-200 f/2.8 and the 85 f/1.8. Tony

No tracking mode on this one. You could probably get away with 1/15 sec at 250mm with IS, but it depends how steady you are yourself. I picked it up on Tuesday from one of the local shops, played with it at home and was able to handhold (with IS on), in the dim living room, at 1/5 sec sitting down. Haven't had a chance to do much else yet, but I'm impressed so far! Rebel XTi, 18-55mm kit, Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM, Tamron 70-300/f4-5.6, Canon 55-250/f4-5.6 IS

Either way Im happy with the results I have been getting with this lens. 6D / 24-70 f2.8 II / 17-40 f4 / 50 f.1.2 / 135 f2

AlienBrain Hatchling 2 posts Joined May 2008 More info | I just got this lens today and did some sharpness tests at the marked focal lengths by varying the aperture from wide open to f/10. The test was done on a tripod in an environment with unchanged lighting. I do a sharpness test for each new lens to figure out which aperture/focal length combinations are the sharpest. I was amazed by the results from this lens because, unlike any other lens I own, this is sharpest wide-open at each focal length. Maybe it is just my copy, but I was amazed by the results. This lens is way fast enough for my purposes (b/c I don't care about stopping the subject's motion, except for at sporting events, which are usually bright), especially with the IS. I shot an image today at 250mm with a 1/8 shutter speed with no blur (I amazed myself). Love this lens so far ... highly recommended.
