This is a nice lens for sports. I didn't use IS. (Yeah, both teams were blue)

Sports Mode JPG, ISO 400, 1/1250 sec, f/5.6, 250mm
This HAS been "tweaked" in post processing (DPP)...the sun was so bright that day that it came out a little over exposed.

I think our boy Urban can take him this year... ;)

I have a good many friends who are Gator fans. It is nice to finally be somewhat competitive.

You mean that guy Urban who uses this??:)

I shot it from my car at a stop sign. I'd say maybe 30-50 feet away. I've only had this lens a few days (actually only had my camera a few days as well) but I've really enjoyed using it.

Also I shot it at 180mm F5.6 ISO200 1/200

It's my understanding that IS in general doesn't do anything for moving subjects. Is that correct?

Jaci

This is correct. In lower light settings the IS will help you to settle camera shake, but the only thing that will help with moving subjects is a fast shutter speed. In low light situations you would want faster lenses -- two lenses that are considered good performers for indoor sports are the 70-200 f/2.8 and the 85 f/1.8.

Don't be dismayed -- "slower" lenses can be used in plenty of situations, and the IS of these lenses will make a big difference, but for the more demanding stuff, like indoor sports, you will need to save your money for the heavy hitter lenses!

The IS is only good for static subjects on the 55-250. No tracking mode on this one. You could probably get away with 1/15 sec at 250mm with IS, but it depends how steady you are yourself.

I picked it up on Tuesday from one of the local shops, played with it at home and was able to handhold (with IS on), in the dim living room, at 1/5 sec sitting down. Haven't had a chance to do much else yet, but I'm impressed so far!

Do you guys find the zoom/focus rings to be loose on this lens compared to the others?

I just purchased the Canon 17-55 and going between it and the 55-250 I thought the zoom ring on the 17-55 was really stiff, but now I think it could be that the 55-250 is 'looser' in the sense that it has less resistance. Either way Im happy with the results I have been getting with this lens.

I just got this lens today and did some sharpness tests at the marked focal lengths by varying the aperture from wide open to f/10. The test was done on a tripod in an environment with unchanged lighting. I do a sharpness test for each new lens to figure out which aperture/focal length combinations are the sharpest. I was amazed by the results from this lens because, unlike any other lens I own, this is sharpest wide-open at each focal length. Maybe it is just my copy, but I was amazed by the results. This lens is way fast enough for my purposes (b/c I don't care about stopping the subject's motion, except for at sporting events, which are usually bright), especially with the IS. I shot an image today at 250mm with a 1/8 shutter speed with no blur (I amazed myself). Love this lens so far ... highly recommended.
