This lens truly seems like a sleeper in terms of IQ vs. cost, great value.

Might get this today as a 2nd lens and pair it up with my 18-55mm kitlens.
Is that combo good for newbie like me (450D body)?

I'd recommend it too, I got it to add to my tarmon 17-50 and its very nice to have a longer lens at times.

30D + Tamron 17-50 + Canon 55-250 IS is the best budget bang for your buck as far as I can tell. I won't need to upgrade to an L glass telephoto until I'm good and ready. I'm really enjoying this setup and I also just got my 430EX! yay!

Went to the store today to get this only to find out that they were out of stock.
Called other stores and they were out as well.
This is frustrating :(

I just sent my Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OS in to B&H for trade-in to get this lens! The problem with the Sigma was singly and alone speed. First, it closes down very quickly. It's f/3.5 only at 18 and 19mm. At 20mm, it closes down to f/4 already. On it goes, and at 140mm it's at f/6.3. At that max aperture, I am (was) having significant problems focusing if not at high noon. The lens needs a huge amount of light AND contrast to focus at f/6.3, so the optical stabilisation was almost wasted on this lens. I finally got tired of missing shots because the lens was unable to find enough contrast to complete the focus with. So, in another couple of weeks, I should be "upgraded" to this babe.

Outdoor: Tokina 12-24mm f/4; Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8; Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8; 2X APO T/C; Sigma 105mm Macro; Indoor: Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8; Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8; Canon 50mm f/1.8; Body: Canon 50D & 350D

My only main issue with the lens is slight vignetting. I thought it was only at 250mm but it seems that is not the case. Does anyone else have this issue?

How is it in low light with a flash ? (e.g. completely useless, just OK, good, only static subjects...)

hmmnnn, haven't noticed any vignetting yet, and haven't tried flash with it, so can't help there.

I was pretty pleased with this shot from today:

I took this a few days ago just before sunset. This is staight out of the camera. No PP...no crop...just resized for flickr. F8, 250mm, 1/250 and 200 ISO.

I REALLY like this lens!

I took some more pictures in my backyard today. Still have yet to really take it anywhere where it can really shine. I'm still debating if I really need a tele, but I guess everyone should have something with a little reach in their bag.

I haven't tried it with flash yet because most of my subjects are too far away. I did just get a 430EX though so I'll post up if I take any. I haven't noticed any vignetting on mine at all.

Some recent shots with very little PP:
