According to the tests I saw on the Digital Picture, you are indeed correct. The stm beats the non stm version. What was a little disturbing was that the lens also beats out the 70-200 f2.8 as well, in terms of sharpness, at practically all similar focal lengths and apertures when used on the canon 60d.

Yah you can't believe all of those tests, but every test I have read say that the stm is sharper at every focal length and aperture as well as faster focusing.
