Anybody shoot motocross with the 55-250IS? I use a Sigma 70-300mm right now and was going to get the 70-200mm f4 until I came across this thread. How well does the 55-2500mm pan/focus with moving objects?

I can't help with motocross, but I use my lens for dog agility and it performs well in good light:

ceegee:

beautiful shots!! Did you pre-focus or were you panning at a really high shutter speed to also freeze the background? Just a really nice job. :)

Thanks for the compliment. One of the advantages of agility is that you know where the dog is going to go. For the border collie I prefocused - she was really fast! For the shepherd mix, as far as I remember I tracked him using AI servo; he was a little slower and easier to follow. Both methods produced good results. Another couple of photos from the same day:

Guess what flew by... this is a crop (not 100% though). This thing was rather far away.

I didn't have time to put CPL on, unfortunately. So I must've overdone trying to bring the blue in the sky - there's some blue "bleeding" around the branches that's not in the original. Otherwise there was no PP.

Just great pics. I am still learning and was figuring pre-focus for something like the agility trials would be best so I thought I would ask to find out if, for a change, I actually "bought a vowel" that appeared in the word. ;)

But the tracked pic in AI Servo is suburb also...panning seems a technique that really requires practice and you did a great job there...

I love going to the agility or field trials for the dawgies...it is always fun for everyone.

Still, love that you can even see the front tethering lines on the blimp. This lens is really so surprising in it's IQ. I am using it exclusively right now for product pics and am getting really pleasing pictures. Soon as we can I am going to get the Sigma 24-60mm f/2.8 to complement the 55-250...especially since some things look so much better in available light. Plus I am not ready for primes just yet...next year as we get into macro we can grab something like a 85mm to fiddle with...and of course one of the 100mm, 105mm or 150mm macro's... ;) sigh....it's only money I guess. ;)

very cute dog with very sharp details....also, very nice Corvette!

Forgive the inconvenience, but if anyone is interested in seeing how this lens works on flowers, if you go to the link in my signature, you'll find a picture of an iris (the second picture). The shot was taken from about 5 feet away from the flower and it picked up detail that is hard to see from 6 inches with the naked eye. The two beach sunset shots were also taken by this lens.

Here are a couple tight motion blur panos I did at a DH race. I had IS on for all images. I don't know if they would have been better or worse with it off. I forgot to experiment. I believe all are shot in AI servo mode. I'll throw some zoom shots in too...
