I'd recognize that sign anywhere! Good old Providence, RI. I'm pretty sure my HS senior prom was held there... and we took the elevator that (used to, anyway) ride up the outside of the building.

Yep, that's it. I live right across the way from there!

From a long distance I don't get very sharp photos (the pelican isn't that sharp), but if I am close to the subject and use the zoom to achieve a more intimate closeness I can get some very nice sharpness from it.

I had the same thing with this lens when I owned one. Works great at shorter focusing distance, but farther away the detail is lost.

This was the primary reason that I sold mine... I also wanted a lens with a bit better build quality for lugging around in the woods with me.

Yeah, but for $200 for a beginner like me, it's a dream. Imagine how amazed I will be when I use my first L zoom!

True.
Im thinking for getting this lens, instead of going for the 70-200L that I thought initially.

also, does the camera body can affect the sharnpess/contrast of the images? Like between an XSI and a 50D, with this same lens.

The camera body will help you with better AF (on the 50D). You also get to fiddle with microadjust on the 50D.
