Pre flash problem

After some puzzlement I've partly solved a problem, just need someone else to solve the rest....

I just got 2 studio strobe heads. I've also got a 580ex with a canon transmitter to trigger it. I was hoping to use this to trigger the main lights so I could go wireless. When I tried it all appeared to trigger ok but my shots were way too dark. When I used a sync cable instead all was fine.

It took me a while (far too long...!) to guess that the 580 was using a preflash which was triggering the studio heads before the main shot.

I had the camera on manual, 1/125 f11 as a starting point. The 580 was set as a slave and set on manual rather than ETTL which I thought would kill the preflash but I guess not. So...... what do I do the kill the preflash?

Thanks

Geoff

The preflash comes from the ST-E2, not the 580. Try tape up the 4 contact pins on the hotshoe, or use a cheap hotshoe adapter between the camera and the ST.
