Sigma is actually $1229
Non IS Canon is $1499 you say...

is the canon really $270 better? All the stuff I have been reading seem to think that there isn't much between the sigma and the canon NON IS.

$270 gets me on my way to a 10-22 which would complete the range I would like to use currently

The Sigma has a few things going for it.. the IQ seems to be mostly a wash, it's cheaper and it's black (I prefer subtle lenses but that's a personal preference thing so that point could swing either way)...

$270 is a notable amount towards a new lens... if I were to be going non-IS I'd probably fork out for the Sigma.

That's what I was thinking......

But IS would be nice...and I could spend big and be done with it.....but then $1000 is a lot...hmmm

Well... like some others here I like the "buy once, buy right" policy - buy the best the first time around so then you don't end up having to sell off later to buy what you should have in the first place :p

Were I in the market for a 70-200 I'd be getting the 2.8 IS. Were I in the market for a non-IS version it'd be the Sigma... not that I'm going to be in the market for either since I have my 135L.. mmm.... sure you can't be tempted into a 135L? :p

You can get a second hand Sigma 70-200 for like $600. They're a decent lens but don't hold their new value like the canon's do.

Probably not helped by the fact that they keep on re-releasing the lens with various tiny changes :p

Does anyone here run generators / battery packs for this stuff?

I run the Profoto B2 and love it.

The Elinchrom ranger series are nice and priced cheaper than the Profoto and Broncolor options, other than that you could look at the White lightning Zeus system.

Have you seen any go second hand? I couldn't find any in the selling section - I'd want to buy local, but even if I didn't there still arent any for sale outside my local area.

There are about a million on ebay at any point in time. Well, not really but they are a pretty common sight.

Must have just listed it. :)

Not sure which version it is though. Doesn't mention "DG" anywhere but there wasn't supposed to be much difference between the original and the DG. I read a few complaints about the MkII but I can't remember what it was in relation to.

$600 is a crazy good price for a 70-200 2.8 lens, DG or not or whatever :p

Well thank you all for the welcome!

Thought I'd tell you my story of retailer abuse :) Well not really

I pre-ordered a 450D through TED's ages ago, then got given a better price through Camerastore so took that and got my deposit back from TED's. Then through some research found that the 55 - 250 kit lens with the 450D is "rubbish" really and decided to change my order again to include the 70-200 f4 IS lens aswell.
Now after talking to wwwway too many people I have just confirmed (this time) a 40D instead of the 450D.

Talk about going around and around in circles! But in the end I got the 40D with the 18-55 IS "play" lens to start with and the 70-200 f4 IS lens aswell to get me off the ground at a reasonable price. So I am now contempt and it should be here tomorrow at last!!

Pheww.... feels good to get all of that out.... I need a drink

ps. You can all go back to what you were doing now, dont mind me

My 20D came with enough battery to play with it for 10-20 minutes in the car on the way home... maybe they stopped doing that or maybe it's just luck :p
