Ok have another little dilemma.

The store didnt have any of the EF-S 18-55 IS lenses that I was going to start with... I can get the Tamron 17-50 2.8 instead for an extra $100... worth it? I'm leaning towards yes rather heavily... will someone give me a push please? or recommend something equivalent as a walk around lens at MAX $550...

Thanks guys

I love my Tamron Banno so i'd say go the Tamron but try and get them to do it for the same price as the original lens you wanted as it's there fault you can't get it.

It's a much better lens than the kit ... f/2.8 etc. For $100 it's a steal.

So I've decided to get ready to plonk some dosh on 3 studio lights that I can run outdoors to overpower the sun. Good times.

Does anyone here run generators / battery packs for this stuff?

I did - briefly :)

I am about to upgrade the power pack 'cos I blew the 12V inverter to smithereens (expensive mistake).

I have a large waterproof bin from Big W that is on wheels and has a handle that's useful for hauling it around - and in there I have a large 12V battery (gel cell) and the inverter. When it worked, it worked a treat - but my strobes overloaded the inverter when I wasn't paying attention - so I'll buy a bigger inverter.

In the end, I'll be running 2 x 600Ws strobes and be able to run an additional 2 x 180Ws strobes miles from any power point - and it all fits easily into the 4WD so I can take it to some pretty remote places.

Edit: Check out Shooter_Boy from up your way. He has a portable pack based around a 12V battery - it's documented here on POTN somewhere (I think it's in the lighting section).

I am the proud owner of the Peleng 8mm Fisheye lens

I have talked to shooter-boy and he seems like a nice guy - willing to help.

I think John got his name wrong (Shooter-Boy vs Shooter_Boy) So I found the link for you cause otherwise you'd be at it a while..

Well, it's been an extremely stressful day (one of my SQL servers decided not to serve any more,) but a couple of hours ago it started working again. So now it's 45 minutes to knock off, all's well, and I have a frothy coffee. /me sighs contentedly

My 20D came with enough battery to play with it for 10-20 minutes in the car on the way home... maybe they stopped doing that or maybe it's just luck :p

Nah, most batteries ship with at least 10% charge in them, sometimes more.

That or a 17-40L if you can find one at around your maximum spend.
