how much did it cost to convert the camera to IR?

actually, what's involved in doing it?

I converted my 10D by myself. Cost $50 in materials and about 4 hours of my life.

Materials depends on what you can find... I enquired about purchasing Schott RM715 glass from someone and they quoted me $175 for a piece to fit my sensor. I thought that was a bit much so I looked on ebay and found a 50mmx50mm piece of RM780 (780nm wavelength cutoff) for $50 shipped from the US. Bargain!! I think you can get a suitable piece from lifepixel for about $150 otherwise or if you are really keen, just buy a 52mm IR filter, pull the glass out and cut to size using a glass cutter. I'm thinking of doing that myself because I'd like a bit more false colour than I am seeing with the 780nm filter.

Instructions for the conversion can be found on the lifepixel site.

Yeah I was thinking of doing 780nm too, it looks nicer for photos...

Dan our lenses arrived. Appart from a barrel tigheting (Took 15 mins on my 70-200L) and some glue on the AF MF switch i think they will be fine. I will test them out shortly and try mail them to you tomorow.

Yes, but what other light do you want to record?

I guess the 400D (which actually belongs to Alan) will either be sold, or kept as an IR project camera - we're undecided at this stage.

If it were up to me, I'd be going for a false colour 780nm filter. :p

that's based on putting on an IR filter on top of the lens... what I'm talking about is taking out the UV filter off the sensor and replacing it with a UV-only filter, so the camera only takes IR photos.

The false colour is provided by the 715/720nm filters. The 780nm is closer to pure IR B&W

Must have got my numbers mixed up... I thought 650 was more B&W and 780 was more colour - did I get it the wrong way round? :p
