Nah - the 40D will do nicely for now

OK, what.... Nah, the 40D is a good camera... It is nice to use and I enjoyed it on a shoot a while back... It just looks awkward with the screen being so big and filling up a lot of the back of the body- I guess this is a non-issue.

Yeah!! That's right!! 5D FTW!!

We should all get something better than Angus has, then he will be forced to get something better, and therefore waste more of his money!! hehe. Just kidding Angus.

I propose that we all get something better than a 40D and pwn Angus!!

Hey - not you, too - are you and Feng on commission if you sell the 5D?!!

(Nice subliminals, BTW)

Haha, no...

**runs and hides**

5D is great though, and I would choose it over the 40D any day. I guess it all comes down to what you want to do with the thing.

For people and things that move at moderate speeds I chose the 5D. If you need it for something else you would obviously make your choice accordingly.

I have no problem with Luke using 40D's to shoot weddings, he uses them well and his images show that.

In the end it's a game of skill, and it really is in the eye of the photographer, the camera is a tool. Without the right tool, in your mind, you will not get the job done.

I maintain that the only tangible benefits of full frame over crop are at the wide end ... i.e. it gives you wide angles and shallow DOF in a way that crop can't.

Is shallow DOF really that desirable at those focal lengths? Not to me. Not to most people.

Apart from that, it's just aesthetics of usability rather than actual improvement in deliverables. Those aesthetic improvements are worth it for some, and that's fine. But I'm a big fan of bang for buck ;)

I guess if I was considering a FF then 5D would be one choice, although would wait until updated model comes out. But remembering I'm using a 400D, and still learning, I figure the 40D is a good step up for me and my skill level.

Having said that, I did learn early on that the two standard kit lenses it came with had major shortfalls, and upgraded those pretty quickly - so agree with "having the right tool". There is much to be said though for "having the eye" - I've seen some pretty shocking shots from ppl who have more gear than they can poke a stick at, and then some brilliant shots with a basic body and kit lens.

You're right, it is a game of skill.

Agreed re wide end, although having started with the 18-55 kit and recently got the 10-22, that's pretty wide, by comparison.

I reckon the 40D is pretty good value at the mo - $940 after rebate at B&H is about as low as you'll get, and has some features on it that I don't have on the 400D.

Oh. Sorry dude ... I actually have one arriving tomorrow :(

Had forgotten you wanted one too, and needed it urgently for a shoot ...

sniff sniff... I feel so unloved...

Oh well, as atonement for your sins, you have to take more detailed product photos of it, and give us all a review as to how good it is :D

Sound fair? :D

Well when you want to pull this sort of shot off at 1pm in the arvo, cutting some light is pretty much mandatory.

Very nice indeed.

Nope, that's what Steve Jobs said in the keynote. A maximum of US$199 in any of the 70 countries it is being sold!! How awesome is that!
