I don't know why I've not ever put other my flash anywhere but a second body... oh well. I finally did. I absolutely LOVE this picture. Its a little soft because he never stops moving, but I love it anyways! And for some reason I was at 1/25th... I don't know..just playin around..

I spent a good portion of my night last night reading just about everything CurtisN has ever posted about flash and could hardly sleep last for the thoughts running through my head! :)

I practiced more on my husband but he won't let me post them! He needed to shave and was wearing a wife beater..I thought it was pretty classic

I like it!
And don't fret the softness--it adds to the atmosphere and feeling of the shot...and of him!
What was your setup? Which flash? Positioned where? Triggered how?
Nice.
Will we ever see the shots of your husband?? Sounds like they're priceless.

I had a 550EX on camera and the 580EX on the floor behind him triggered with the built in wireless system.

The pics of him are pretty priceless, I was dying laughing...but I think for the sake of my marriage I should keep them to myself!!

You have NO idea how glad I was to hear you say that! I just started setting up my system to do more off camera flash. I've got a 550EX and I'm planning to get the 580EXII! In the short term, though, I've got a ST-E2 coming in a day or two so that I can do single flash/off camera work first.
Do you have any bounce or diffuser on the on-camera flash?
What you've got with this shot is what I want!

(C'mon....we won't tell your husband!)

grace, just curious but why the 550 on and 580 off? Did you feel you needed more power in the slave?

Off camera flash is a slippery slope girl. Soon you look for ways to do crazy things.

I don't do it nearly enough. I have the gear for it, but rarely the subject. You can use off camera flash more than you think and I should think more. ;)

I really like this picture. The flash removes any hint of family snapshot. Excellent.

I guess because I already had the 550 on the camera.. I don't really see that much difference in the 550 and the 580 to be honest.

thanks. Just wanted to make sure I didn't miss something. I have started to play in this realm, and use my 550s off camera all together. both on light stands with umbrellas. I' trying to figure out how to use them as cheap alternatives for studio lights until I can afford true studio strobes.

nice, cute shot of your son. I like the backlighting/rim effect.

Typically my off camera flash is the main and therefore it often times needs to be the one that delivers more power. It is because of this that I usually use my 580EX II off camera and my older 580EX or 550EX on camera. The EXII seems to cycle faster so it is the logical choice to use as the workhorse.

I spent a good portion of my night last night reading just about everything CurtisN has ever posted about flash

Don't forget Leo's tutorials on E-TTL wireless flash in the sticky thread. A flash used for backlighting like that should be in group C. Those tutorials will help you understand why.

Grace, with your creative genius, the use of off-camera light will open up endless possibilities. I look forward to seeing more of your shots!

Makes sense to me also. I just have 550ex units, so it doesn't matter which is on and which is off;)

Off camera flash(s) are the best. I have since bought an umbrella and a small softbox as well as some ebay wireless triggers when I am outside and distance is an issue. Can't wait for the weather to get better...

Nice Shot - have fun!!
