So my friend decided to get his car washed and wanted some pictures of it. I had my gear with me so we went for it. Shooting black cars is really really hard when you dont have the right location. Time was running out we didnt have much of a location but we made do. Only had about 25min before we got booted. :(

Now my questions, i have read some strobist stuff, and i know about direct reflection and difused reflection. But i tried the family of angles to attempt to avoid the specular highlights in the car, but i think black at that time is pretty much unavoidable right? Unless i were to move the light super close to the car and turned the power down? Or would a large difuser help more making the light source larger.

Now in an ideal situation i would have put the car to the sunset getting some rim lighting toward the back but no time :(

lights were set up pass side front quarter panel, driver side quarter panel and dr side rear quarter panel. bare strobes.

please give me feed back be as brutal as you want, its how i learn.

Shooting black is tough in any situation, especially with strobes. Not a bad attempt at all.

Agreed. I would bet you did not fire the strobe that was on the side of the car on number 5? There is no reflection.

#5 is great, but you can see the stands for your strobe in the reflection of the car.

lol with strobes anyway lol. i have learned that the only way i will shoot a black car will be in doors painting with strobe or just using sunset diffused lighting shots, and big softbox to accent certains parts and then composite in post.
